Default Hidden Gems: Scott Steiner

Welcome to SLASHHH's weekly column, Hidden Gems....Each week, SLASHHH will take an unbiased look at some of the jobbers to grace the WWE. Excludin' HHH, the owner of the WWE (LMFAO!!!!) SLASHHH will try and take a negative subject and turn it into a positive one. Except for RVD, that spot lovin', HHH jobbin', Where Are All The ECW fans now you dumb fuck? He is beyond help...

Now, onto the subject of Scott Steiner....To understand where is he now, we must look at where he hsa been....

A two-time All-American wrestler out of University of Michigan. Steiner's first major run in wrestling was in the World Wrestling Association in Indianapolis in '86. In 1988, Scott ventured over to the Championship Wrestling Association in Tennessee. Scott then left the CWA and joined up with his brother Rick. The duo then went to WCW and enjoyed successful title reigns in WCW, WWF as well as Japan.

I'm not here to give a history lesson, so I degress....

Scott Steiner was an innovated wrestler who enjoyed much success in singles and the tag-team division. Scott Steiner was in his early days, a tag-team
specialist, enjoying success in the U.S. and Japan. Along with his brother Rick, they formed one of the greatest tag-teams ever, The Steiner Brothers. Perhaps his biggest challengs didn’t come until his run as WCW champion, known to his victims as ”The Reign Of Terror”.

Steiner revigerated his career when he turned heel with the nWo. It was here Steiner's wrestling savy took a turn for the worst. As his "Big Poppa Pump" gimmick took presidence, so did the steroids. This hampered his in-ring ability, but he had come a far way with his wrestling persona. One of the few good things about the WCW in its dyin' days, Steiner was even able to make a program with Goldberg, decent.

After WCW folded, it took 2 years for Steiner to join the WWE. A miriad of injuries and steroid abuse took its toll on Steiner, and boy did it show. The innovator of the Frankensteiner, Steiner was a shadow of his former self. He joined the WWE and was catapulted into a feud with HHH.

Here, is where the character of Big Poppa Pump was mis-managed. WWE, in all its infinite wisdom, decided to give Poppa Bump's character a face-lift....Get it, face, Ah you fuckin' stupid RVD marks.....Anyways, one of the greatest notions when WCW was around, was BBP's character was too edgy for Turner television, and that he was custom suited for the WWF's "Attitude" style. I could not agree more, yet when Steiner arrived. They totally forgot what made Steiner over. It wasn't Steiner flexin' that made him over, it was his heelish, edgy, "I'm Da Fuckin' Man" attitude that made him over. So, Smarks and Marks alike crucified Steiner for his lack of in-ring ability. They chastised him when really, the WWE failed to cater to its new price catch.

Which brings me to my point. With the recent heel-turn of Steiner, the WWE has finally begun to dig up the hidden gem that is "Freakzilla". Given a little freedom, droppin' the whole Stacey/Test program (Both should be shot and thrown to TNA.), Steiner can prove to be one of the more intrguing characters of RAW. His heel-front could easily mask his poor wrestling ability, he's a heel, he doesn't need to be able to wrestle. If the WWE fleshes Steiner's character out a little more, I guarantee Steiner can make a turn for the better. With the recent Team: Bischoff announcement, I was intrigued at the feelin' I had at seein' Steiner and Jericho next to Bischoff. It brought back memories of the Dangerous Alliance, a young nWo, the 4 Horsemen. When heels are given the time and effort, as we saw with HHH, they become integral parts of the show. If WWE continues with a Steiner push, gives him a decent run with Goldberg, "Big Poppa Bump" will no longer be a hidden gem, but a RAW super-star.

Feedback you bastard marks.....

Next Week, I will look at what it takes for RVD to reach the next level....

When you think of Steiner you must think of him in two different aspects. You have Scotty Stiener the inovator and then you got Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner the mouth. Back in the day when Steiner was a face he was over well with the crowd, but the thing that made me like him wasn't that he was a good guy and that he was down with Sting and JYD and others but the fact that he was ill will in the ring. The man has brought such great moves as the Frankinstiener and the SteinerScrewdriver. Back in the day of his prime these were moves that made you take a double take when you first saw them, his in ring ability was untapped and the sky was the limit. When he made his heel turn I don't think it could have happend at a better time. Right around the time of his turn was when I started to notice that this wasn't the same wrestler that I had grown up watching. He was slower, less agile, he seemed winded more easily, he was even sometimes sluggish in the ring. I agree that the Heel change was the best thing for him to do at this point, because a little cheating in the match would sell it better for him to win.....I also agree that one of the mistakes that happend to Steiner was that WWE brought him in as a face like a bunch of dumbass's. The man had made the 2nd half of his career not on in-ring talent but more on gimmick and speech. Vince should have saw that immedatly, he was no longer entertaining the crowd by wrestling but by talking. He should have never tried to take his BPP gimmick and tried to use it as a face gimmick and just wouldn't work. The same way when he was just Scott Steiner too much talking and being a face wouldn't have worked for him either. With the recent heel turn I agree that if anything it is a step in the right direction. I don't think that Steiner can carry a solid Mainevent match for a major ppv however, and I truly think that he has only one more chance at a run for a title and after that it could be the end of Steiner, only time will tell, but the best thing for him to do would be to join a serious stable and work from there.

BTW nice post Slashhh

Great post, and I have to agree with your assessment of Steiner's new role. Since his heel turn, he has arguably been the most entertaining character on Raw. It's good to see that he's finally back to doing what he does best---not competing in posedowns and arm-wrestling competitions, but yelling obscenities at the fans and throwing other wrestlers face-first into steel steps.

Well, Steiner still got in the ring and failed all on his own. I always gave him credit for busting his ass to get in WWE when other's were sitting around waiting for a McMahon hand out, but Steiner did absolutely awful when he started. His Test fued (Amazingly) salvaged his career. But I don't see any way for him to really be taken seriously for a while. Still, he's got an image, and a name, and sometimes, that's all you ever need. (points at Berg)

Yeah I use to enjoy watching Scott Steiner when he was with his brother about 10 years ago and they were a good team and Scott knew how to get in there and put on a good match and the fans enjoyed it for many years. I have seen some outstanding matches with Steiner over the years from the early WCW days
and in Japan and matches with Sting,Dr.death,Vader and some of the greatest wrestlers to ever come out of Japan and those matches could go on forever but they entertaining to watch. But when Scott Steiner went on his own things started to change with his character and he started to get alot of muscle and too much for his body and he looked discusting and he could not wrestle like he use to but fans liked him because he is Scott Steiner and everything that he brought to the ring night in night out and you never forget stuff like that. But Steiner was fading people got tired of him and then when WCW went under there was no sign of Scott Steiner and I always wondered about him and asked does he still have it. then he showed up in the WWE and I was happy to see him but what a disappointment that he turned out to be,he was not the same person that I remember watching years ago he does not have it anymore and it sucks because I know and I know that alot of fans know what Scott Steiner is all about and how good he is but it's just not there anymore and it's a damn shame.
