Default Best US-Born Technical Wrestler

Who in your mind would go down as the best of all time from the United States of America?

In my mind, nobody sticks out better then "The Nature Boy". Ric Flair is one of the best technical wrestlers to ever grace the squared circle. His presence, character, charisma, and wrestling ability has helped him become the Champion we all know of and the wrestler everyone strives to be. He will go down as one of the greatest of all time because he focused on the little things that make a technical wrestler. He worked the same injury threwout the match, he played the crowd like only he could, and whether he won or lost, nothing would go against his credibility because of the way he would turn the tables the next night.

Flair was apart of one of the greatest factions in wrestling history, the 4 Horsemen. Guided by JJ Dillion in the first days, along with his comrades Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson, and Tully Blanchard, they lived the life the spoke about. They WERE limosine riding, jet flying, wheeling-dealing, son of a guns... They lived the life of rockstars because they were so popular with the NWA. They carved the path for future stables to come in and they created a legacy, every stable that followed, strived to acheive.

Ric Flair has been a man of the sport, and a wrestler for the fans. He pays attention to the fans and puts his body on the line to entertain them, maybe not to the extent like todays warriors, but he still does what is necessary to entertain, in the Nature Boy way.

The Strut, the music, 'The Nature Boy' name tag, the ring gear, the NWA Title, the Figure Four, 'Whoooo', and the Nature Boy chops, all became trademark to him. Everytime Ric Flair comes out, struts, or chops, the crowd immediately yells, 'Whoo!' Not many people have that ability to take a move that had been done for quite some time and make it his own and the crowd identify with it, whether he is present or not.

Now, I believe Ric Flair should have one last run with the Intercontinental Championship, not the WWE Championship, I feel he can no longer carry a title of that caliber, his years of constant wrestling and prime focus are over, sad but true. An Intercontinental Championship run could help put over the title as credible, considering a former 25 time World Champion is holding it, and the person who takes the belt from Flair will get more over in the process.

Flair is not a man looking out for himself, but the stars of tommorow. He hasn't had a problem with putting someone over, I don't think he ever had under the right conditions. He is a Champion's Champion and deserves a run with the Intercontinental Championship.

Very well said...But I think the lines between "technical/great wrestler" and "great worker" have been somewhat "smuged" to say the least....

Ric Flair was a great "Worker". From the strut, to the "Woooo," to everything in between, Ric Flair could work the crowd, work his opponent and run for president all at the same time. His microphone work was the best of his time and he stills cuts a promo better than 95% of the athletes out their today. His work with the most influential group today, "The 4 Horsemen" paved the way for the Dangerous Alliance, the nWo and More recently, Evolution. Ric Flair has made the book, that all inevitably follow, HBK, Jericho, Trips, they all have taken from Naitch.Whether it be the characteristics of the arrogant, Jet Flyin', Limousine Ridin', Wheelin' and Dealin', Women Stealin' 16- Time World Champion, Wooooo!!! or the ring generalship Flair created all those years ago with his great matches with Steamboat, Race, Rohdes and so on. All wrestlers to follow Ric flair will have borrowed from him in some way. Now, back to my point. Ric Flair was the greatest "Worker" of all-time. Those "chops", those "struts", the "fall on his knees and beg for mercy" heel tactics were great works.I think there IMHO is abig difference between work and wretlse.

IMHO, Kurt Angle when all is said and done will become the greatest "US" born technical wrestler.Where Ric Flair was noted for his great "workmanship", Kurt Angle can flat out wrestle. His Olympic Gold Medal at the '96 Olympics can prove that. This is where I have a tough time discerning wrestling from workmanship. It is a tough debate that has no real answers. Kurt has great wrestling skills on top of Ric Flair's great workmanship. Kurt can promo, and have the crowd hanging on every word he says.

On the other hand, it is hard to discern between the two generations. Ric Flair practically invented wrestling down south. Yes, of course there was the AWA and Memphis. But Jerry Lawler and Nick Bockwinkle have no where near the appeal of Ric Flair. Ric Flair has made wrestling what it is today. Hogan may have let wrestling known to the masses, but Hogan appeals more to "The Rock" side of the business while Flair definately appeals to the "Kurt Angle" side of the business. Angle, today, is I believe a better athlete than Flair ever was, answering the literal part of your question. But Flair has done so much for this sport that he deserves the nod.

Side Note: HHH's idol is "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair...
