Default Chargers axe falls hard

Neal among 3 released by Chargers as team heads into free agency
By BERNIE WILSON,
AP Sports Writer
2 hours, 49 minutes ago

SAN DIEGO (AP)—All-Pro fullback Lorenzo Neal was released Thursday by the San Diego Chargers, who also parted with safety Marlon McCree and right tackle Shane Olivea in the hours before free agency opened.

General manager A.J. Smith said all three requested their release so they can quickly jump into free agency.

“They want to start somewhere else,” Smith said at a news conference. “They want an opportunity, and I understand that.”

Olivea had four years left on his contract, while McCree and Neal each had three years remaining.

Even though Neal was a Pro Bowler as well as an All-Pro, his role was expected to diminish in 2008. The Chargers tried to trade the 15-year veteran during the recent NFL Scouting Combine.

McCree is probably best remembered for fumbling a fourth-down interception in the fourth quarter that gave the New England Patriots new life in a playoff win over the top-seeded Chargers after the 2006 season.

Still, it’s expected that there will be a demand for his services.

Olivea lost his starting job to Jeromy Clary midway through the season. McCree’s release allows Eric Weddle to move into the starting lineup. The Chargers sent Chicago four picks, including this year’s third-rounder, to move up 25 spots in the second round of last year’s draft to take Weddle.

The Chargers ended a four-game playoff losing streak stretching back to the 1994 Super Bowl, reaching the AFC championship game before losing 21-12 at New England.

“This time we did make some noise,” Smith said. “We played in three pressure-packed football games, and I believe in the future this is going to serve us well.”
Holy shit.

McRee and Olivea are one thing but cutting Lorenzo freaking Neil??!

Maybe Exo might have seen this coming but I certainly didn't.

Late.

If you or someone you know has been caused grief by an "Internet Bully" then you and/or that person is nothing but a little punk ass bitch, and the world would be a better, more manly place if you'd just jump off a fucking bridge already. Late.

It was no surprise. I like Marlon, but he was getting shredded last year. It's too bad because he was pretty smart out there and got our secondary really solidified. But with Jammer and Cro out there, we don't need him as much and Weddle is a great player who is expected to lock down that position leaving a rotation of 3 other guys on the other side. Our secondary should continue to impove but we should be looking for one of those hundred safty's that are out there in FA. Either that or one of our shitload of lb's can drop back.

Neal was a fan fave, but the reality is that Norv just isn't going to be using him as much as he wants to be. He went down for a good chunk of last season and the slow poke Andrew Pinnock played really well, like the way Neal used to play. It was a pretty mutual decision. Neal wanted to play more and that just wasn't going to happen in SD, so they agreed to part ways even though he was under contract.

Olivea lost his starting job and was being a pain in the ass. Nobody will miss him around SD, but he might be able to help out some other team. We've got some young guys that can step up and hold down the right side of the line. McNeil, Dielman and Hardwick are solid on the left and center. Goff is playing ok, but we could upgrade the right gaurd position as well.

We're gonna lose more players in the next few days. Drayton Florence and Carlos Polk can go. Fuck Drayton. Micheal Turner will be gone, but we got depth at rb. He'll make some team happy. Eric Parker will most likely be gone as well. So, we'll be trimming the roster a bit and opening up some more cap space. We got like 15 mil right now, and after the dust settles, we should be fine to go spend some money on a couple of role players. AJ built depth on this team. Our fucking backups could start on most teams. We signed Harris out of SF, which is a little odd, since we have tons of lb's, but in the 3-4, it never hurts to have plenty. Anthony Waters should make some waves this season. We'll see. We didn't win the super bowl and we got a tough schedule this season, so we gotta do something to get better.

I'd like to see Michael Turner end up in Big D alongside Marion Barber. That'd be a fuckin' dope ass RB tandem.

Yep. Thats optimally what I want to see. But I think Chicago might have a little too much money to flash for us to get him in...

Turner went to Atlanta. Good for him. He'll be featured heavily. I hope he can hold his own.
