NFL | Senator demands knowledge about destroyed Patriots videotapes
Fri, 1 Feb 2008 07:19:49 -0800

Greg Bishop and Pete Thamel, of the New York Times, report Senator Arlen Specter, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, is calling on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to explain why videotapes confiscated from the New England Patriots during the team's Spygate scandal were destroyed. Specter said the Judiciary Committee will eventually bring Goodell in to speak with him about why the tapes were destroyed and about the league's antitrust exemption. "That requires an explanation," Specter said. "The NFL has a very preferred status in our country with their antitrust exemption. The American people are entitled to be sure about the integrity of the game. It's analogous to the C.I.A. destruction of tapes. Or any time you have records destroyed."

NFL | Goodell defends destruction of Patriots videotapes
Fri, 1 Feb 2008 12:34:17 -0800

The Associated Press reports NFL commissioner Roger Goodell defended his actions regarding destroying New England Patriots videotapes Friday, Feb. 1. "The reason I destroyed the tapes is they were totally consistent with what the team told me," Goodell said during his State of the NFL speech. "It was the appropriate thing to do and I think it sent a message." NFL security confiscated a video camera and a tape from a Patriots employee during New England's 38-14 victory over the New York Jets in the 2007 season opener. The employee was accused of aiming the camera at the Jets defensive coaches when they signaled to players on the field. Another reason he destroyed the tapes was that one tape was leaked to the media just after the Patriots-Jets game. Goodell made it clear that he is convinced the Patriots have acted in good faith since the tapes were discovered.
Yeah, and that message is, cheat if you're the patriots and we'll put the whole thing to rest for you

Regardless as to whether or not they were destroyed for the reason Goodell said, destroying them was not a smart move. Anyone would realize that destroying evidence of a team cheating is sketchy. If Goodell was trying to send a message, the only message he sent was "We're trying to hide something."
