Default Roy Williams...

Is it just me or is Roy Williams overrated as hell? I know he's a hard hitter and all, but he's pretty slow and seems to have trouble getting the ball when he's playing the zone. He just seems like an okay safety at best. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that he's one of the most overrated players in the NFL.

Is Roy Williams overrated?

Roy Williams is not overrated. I'm fucking sick of people saying that. He isn't that good in coverage, but the Cowboys don't need to use him for that. If you been watching the Cowboys you'll notice they always have him playing near the line to put pressure on the QB. His lack of coverage skills make up for his hitting ability. He is the hardest hitter in the league.

Maybe if they had a safety that played coverage their secondary would be better. Their biggest flaw is their secondary... maybe they should improve it.

Their biggest flaw isn't their secondary. That have an awesome secondary. Newman has been amazing all season. Henry has played amazing too. Its too bad he's missed the last three games.

Was about to agree with my NHL thread being the worst thread ever created in sports but looks like I just changed my mind.

Roy Williams is the type defensive football player whose skills and plain intensity just shut down offenses'.

Roy Williams is the greatest defensive player right now besides Julius Peppers.

That's just my opinion, I've seen him play, and I really like his intensity.

If you're talking about Roy Williams the wide receiver for Detroit...I saw him drop three picture perfect passes the other day so yeah he's overrated.

Roy Williams the headhunter from Dallas though...if anything he's underrated. A safety is basically a linebacker who weighs less than 235 lbs. Coverage of the WRs isn't what a safety is supposed to specialize in, otherwise Deion Sanders would've switched to safety instead of playing the NickelBack.

Safeties are there to "help" in coverage and/or lay the wood to the ball carrier. Roy does that very well.

Late.

That's not neccersarily true. Some defenses rely heavily on a saftie's ability to cover receivers. For example, a cover-2 defense. Those two safties are usually the only thing in between the receiver and the endzone...if they screw up, then there's 6 points. However, Roy could be an exception because he hits like a mother

Cover 2 is IMO a fool's defense. I can't get with the idea of giving up the middle of the field, which on routes of 10 yards or more is open all day in cover 2.

But yeah, Roy's idea of coverage is waiting until the WR catches the ball and then putting his helmet into the guy's numbers and jarring the ball loose.

Late.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the Cover 2 either. The Jets tried to run it last year in a few key games, which didn't turn out too well sometimes. I'm more of a Cover 3 guy, especially in the 3-5-3 Defense we run at my school. We drop the 2 outside backers into the flat, the corners and the safety into deep thirds, and the three inside backers into what we call the "hook-to-curl", an area 10-15 yards off the line of scrimmage to take away any underneath routes. It's a pretty effective defesne. But they don't use it in the NFL because at that level, it's easy to block in a zone scheme and probably not very efficient in the deep passing game on that level, either. Oh well, it works for us (we won the conference championship this year )

I like whatever system the Panthers use, because they can stop the run and the pass as well. I don't know what it's called, but I know that the lineman and linebackers are 4-3.
