Default 49ers and Smith agree to terms...

Rookie Smith, 49ers agree to six-year contract
ESPN.com Updated: July 26, 2005, 9:16 AM ET

The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft, have agreed to terms on a $49.5 million, six-year contract, ESPN has learned.

Smith will receive $24 million in guaranteed money, which includes his bonus. Smith's average annual salary of $8.25 million tops the $7.5 million average the Giants gave to quarterback Eli Manning, the first pick in the 2004 draft.

The 49ers are expected to call a news conference Tuesday to announce Smith's signing. Several details needed to be worked out Monday night, and the document will be more than 30 pages long once it's completed.

The $24 million in guarantees for Smith is a 20 percent increase over Manning's deal -- Manning had $20 million of his $45 million guaranteed in 2004. Both deals were negotiated by by Tom Condon and Ken Kremer of IMG Football.

Condon and 49ers director of football operations Paraag Marathe had worked for months on the details of a contract that is expected to stretch 70 to 80 pages. In recent days, both sides had acknowledged that about 80 percent of the contract was completed. Condon flew to the Bay Area on Sunday afternoon to resume face-to-face negotiations Monday, and the deal was agreed upon by Monday afternoon.

The agreement, which is expected to break the negotiating inertia among the highest draft picks, will allow Smith to report to training camp Friday with the rest of the 49er rookies. In fact, San Francisco is making enough progress with its other draft choices such that everyone is expected to report to camp on time.

Smith is expected to be the 49ers' starter as the team attempts, under first-year coach Mike Nolan, to rebuild from a dismal 2-14 season. The team opens camp in Santa Clara, Calif., on Thursday.

Smith, who left Utah after his junior season, led the Utes to their first BCS bowl win, a victory over Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl. They finished 12-0.

This past season, Smith completed 185 of 280 passes for 2,624 yards with 28 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He also rushed for 563 yards and 10 touchdowns in the regular season. He finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
================================================== ========

Thank freaking God...now everyone else that was picked in the first round can get their deals done and get into their respective camps...took long enough. I mean come on...Captain Kangaroo...errr, Carson Palmer signed his deal before the draft was even underway...what the hell is taking so long these days??

Thoughts?

Late.

That Rookie got a sweet ass deal....NFL is a whole different game from college.
I seriously doubt he'll put up the numbers that would deserve that salary.

Maybe more gifted physically, Palmer does have a frickin' Howitzer for an arm...but who's got the Super Bowl victory under his belt?? I like Dilfer's poise...plus he's only a stopgap for Charlie Frye....who worries me.

Prolly not. That reminds me of an NFL Network commercial for the start of training camps, and it was basically coaches giving encouraging one liners to the rookies...until they got to Chucky Gruden who just said, "Your signing bonus can't help you now."

Late.

He has the skill.

He sure as hell doesn't have the people on his team that could do anything for him.

The '49ers are really foolish for signing this guy for that much money. More than likely, he will be a flop.

Sure...you can take a run at numbfuck SC or plainjane Josh or complete moron Alex or can't get out of his own way Boston...but I don't agree with you about Barry and it's "Rueben Droughns this" "weed that" "your kids this" "Look at me and my halo over my head that."

Whatever. First of all, you don't have any depth of knowledge about any of that stuff, so you're just talking out of your ass. Secondly, you wouldn't be saying any of that shit if Barry Bonds wasn't some roided up freak who you're in love with.

It's fucking gay. I have better things to do than deal with someone who can't even debate a point, rather changes the subject again and again to deflect the fact that he's dead wrong. It's what dumbass 6th graders do...

I honestly don't give a fuck about your opinion. Like I told Alex, they're just words on a screen. I can't believe you don't get that concept...but okay.

I mean...you're the kind of guy that thinks if you yell louder than the other person, you will win a debate. And that's not new either...I've pretty much thought that about you from day one...

I didn't want to put it that way, but since you want to press on...

Lame dude. Just lame. I have better shit to do. You probably should too...but I'm betting you don't...
