NBA notebook: Simmons to leave Clippers for Bucks

By The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE Milwaukee has become a desired destination in the league.

On Thursday, guard Michael Redd a coveted free agent rebuffed Cleveland's offer and chose to stay with the Bucks to play alongside No. 1 draft pick Andrew Bogut.

Bobby Simmons, a free agent previously with the Los Angeles Clippers, has decided to join Redd and Bogut in Milwaukee.

Simmons' agent, Mark Bartelstein, said yesterday that the agreement is for about $47 million over five years, pending final wording in the new collective-bargaining agreement.

The Bucks would say only that they intend to sign Simmons once the league's moratorium period on player movement ends July 22.

Forward Simmons, 25, was honored as the league's most improved player last season after averaging 16.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

The Bucks originally pursued Simmons in case Redd decided to go to the Cavaliers. Redd agreed to stay in Milwaukee with a six-year deal worth at least $90 million.

"This originally started out as talks in case Michael left, but as we talked more and more, it started to make sense for Bobby even if Michael stayed," Bartelstein said. "So, we just kept talking and they had enough [salary] cap room. It worked out well for both."

Bartelstein said the Clippers made a competitive offer to keep Simmons and several teams showed interest, "but the ones with enough cap room were the only ones who could chase him."

Nike is using photos of Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers for the first time since his arrest in 2003 for an alleged sexual assault on a female employee at a Colorado resort.

"Nike agrees with most NBA observers that Kobe ranks among the very best players in the NBA, and his training and preparation are key elements of his game," Nike spokesman Rodney Knox said.

The ads appear in Sports Illustrated. Bryant's name appeared in an ad earlier this year. Prosecutors dismissed a sexual-assault charge against Bryant last September after his accuser declined to go ahead with the case. Bryant publicly apologized to her without admitting guilt.

The Memphis Grizzlies agreed to terms on a two-year deal with their first-round draft pick, forward Hakim Warrick of Syracuse.

The 6-foot-9 Warrick was the 19th player taken.

First-round pick Nate Robinson, a former Washington Husky, scored a game-high 19 points as the New York Knicks beat the Washington Wizards 80-71 in the Reebok Vegas Summer League in Las Vegas. The 5-foot-9 guard also had six rebounds. His three-game scoring average is 21 points.

Herb Williams, who was named the Knicks' coach Jan. 22 and went 16-27, hasn't been offered the permanent job. But he has interviewed Paul Westphal, a former Sonics coach and player, for a position on his staff. The 54-year-old Westphal, who is Pepperdine's coach, also played for the Knicks.

Good move by the Bucks. Clippers big mistake was being to infatuated with Ray Allen and Mike Redd rather than focus on re-signing Simmons.
