Default BCS progress

It was formally announced that the Fiesta Bowl will host the first BCS title game on Jan. 8, 2007 under the new double-hosting format that begins in 2006.

Beginning with the 2007 bowls, the four BCS bowls will take turns hosting two games each postseason. The first game, on or around Jan. 1, will be the traditional bowl (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange). The next, approximately a week later, will be the BCS title game featuring the 1-2 teams in the final BCS poll.

As of now that game is branded only as the "BCS title game" with appropriate sponsors.

The Fiesta Bowl will actually host three bowl games after the 2006 season. It also runs the Insight Bowl. It will stage that game, the Fiesta Bowl and the BCS title game, all within a two-week span.

Also, the I-A commissioners sent a letter to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives noting their "continuing commitment to a system that is fair and inclusive."

Approximately 18 months ago BCS officials were called to hearings, in part to explain what had become perceived its exclusionary practices. Largely because of those hearings, the BCS decided to expand to a fifth bowl thus providing better access to non-BCS schools.

Weiberg said the letter was written on the advice of the lobbyist organization the BCS uses in Washington. It was not a response, he said, to any current problems or out of reaction from the recent baseball/steroid hearings.

"We just wanted to be proactive," he said.

================================================== =======

We're getting closer to that all important playoff.

Exactly. Until that happens, the BCS hasn't progressed.

This is kind of cool though.

The opening post is a bit misleading. Just to clarify things here is another article on the matter that explains it better.
------------------

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistor.../fb/fbc/3155634

An excerpt:

"
PHOENIX - The Fiesta Bowl organization was awarded the first national college football championship game under the new, expanded Bowl Championship Series format on Tuesday, and the BCS schools worked to find a new poll to help select the teams that will play for the title.

Beginning in the 2006 season, there will be a new game to determine the BCS national champion, a contest separate from the four existing BCS bowls the Fiesta, Orange, Sugar and Rose. In essence, it means that two more schools will qualify for a BCS contest.

As in the current system, the teams that finish first and second in the BCS will play for the championship."
-----------------------

This is nothing new. It's just a money maker thing that clarifies nothing.

If 2 more schools are in, I'd love to see the Mountain West get an automatic bid.

Yep and that Stadium in Glendale, AZ is almost built and I think it will be open in time for The Arizona Cardinals 2005 Season....I am glad they are have a new bowl game out there rather than their original idea of moving the Fiesta Bowl from Tempe almost 30 miles away to Glendale.
