Default Prescription Steroids and The Panthers

Report: Three members of Panthers given steroid subscriptions

March 30, 2005
NEW YORK (Ticker) - The NFL may seek to make its steroids policy more stringent.

According to a report on the CBS show "60 Minutes," three members of the Carolina Panthers team that reached the Super Bowl in 2004 received prescriptions for banned steroids weeks before the game.

Starting center Jeff Mitchell, former starting left tackle Todd Steussie and punter Todd Sauerbrun were implicated in the CBS report, that will be telecast Wednesday night.

The report stems from a Drug Enforcement Administration investigation of Dr. James Shortt, a West Columbia, South Carolina doctor accused of prescribing steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

According to the report, the players had prescriptions for testosterone cream filled within two weeks of Super Bowl XXXVIII. In addition to the cream, Sauerbrun, a three-time Pro Bowler, obtained syringes and the injectable steroid Stanozolol.

Mitchell, Steussie and Sauerbrun are witnesses to the investigation of Shortt but not prime targets, according to Panthers general manager Marty Hurney.

"Any time there's allegations like this regarding members of the organization, it concerns us greatly," Hurney said.

A former assistant to Shortt told CBS that "half a dozen" NFL players received prescriptions for human growth hormone.

None of the players tested positive for steroids. Steussie played last season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The NFL has been praised for its steroid testing program, especially in comparison to Major League Baseball. NFL players who fail tests for steroids face a four-game suspension without pay for a first offense. Seven players from each team are chosen randomly each week for testing during the season and throughout the playoffs.

Any changes to testing procedures would have to be negotiated with the union.

More steroids in Major Sports...great. One thing though...Sauerbrun?? The Punter?? Come on bro...you gotta be kidding, right??

Late.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing about it being the punter, the least valuable position on the team

Hey man....as punter for the Browns from 1999 to 2003, Chris Gardocki was pretty much my team's MVP in that span...

I was referring to the people that actually get on the field. Besides, if we heard anything about a coach taking 'roids, the only news headlines it'd make is probably Leno, Letterman, and Jon Stewart

That says more about the team than it does the punter

Last couple of years he was there, when he'd come in to punt late in games when the Browns were out of it, we'd be in the stands chanting: "MVP!! MVP!! MVP!!" That would be sooooo much more funny if it weren't true....
