Default Broncos Sign Brown

Broncos Brown bag it(paraphrase)

Jeff Legwold, Rocky Mountain News

The Denver Broncos continue to gamble the Cleveland Browns' losses will be their gain.

Only weeks after trading for former Browns defensive tackle Gerard Warren, the Broncos have landed former Cleveland defensive end Courtney Brown. The former Penn State athlete, who also made visits to Washington, Seattle and Jacksonville in the past two weeks, informed the Broncos and Redskins on Monday morning he intends to sign with Denver, an NFL source told the Rocky Mountain News.

The Washington Post also reported Brown's decision on its Web site.

Denver and Washington had been the most aggressive in their pursuit of Brown.

The Broncos have agreed to the basic terms of a contract with Brown, but no signed deal had been received by league offices as of Monday night.

Like Warren, who wore the tag as an underachiever in his time with the Browns, the Broncos are hoping a fresh start brings out more in the oft-injured Brown. Brown was the first pick in the 2000 draft but has missed 33 games during the past five seasons because of a wide assortment of injuries, including 14 games last season with a torn ligament in his left foot.

Brown, who is rehabilitating from surgery to repair the ligament, failed a physical before he was released March 15 by Cleveland (he was due a $2.5 million bonus that day). And he has told teams he will not be full speed until at least May.

He has played 16 games in a season only once in his career, as a rookie in 2000. Brown's best overall season, according to several pro personnel directors around the league, likely was 2003, when he finished with 60 tackles, six sacks and four tackles for loss.

The Broncos' newly hired defensive line coach, Andre Patterson, who coached Brown and Warren at Cleveland the past two seasons, has vouched for both players in personnel meetings at Denver, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said.

Brown told the News earlier this month he was "looking forward to putting (the injuries) behind me" and called Patterson "a real good coach." Brown added Warren had told him the Broncos would be a "a good fit."

Shanahan, who could not be reached for comment, described Brown as "a freak" athletically at the league meetings last week and said he believed the 27-year-old was "well worth" the risk.

"It doesn't matter where he goes, he's stepping in and playing," Shanahan said. "The question is can he stay healthy? And I think that's where he is, he wants to step up, too. Here's the guy who was the first pick of the draft, he wants to get to another level, too. He's tired of being hurt."

The Broncos offered Brown a deal with incentives based on playing time, as did the Redskins. The Browns also had made an offer to Brown. Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel said the team would even consider playing him at linebacker in Cleveland's new 3-4 look if Brown returned.

Brown's arrival gives the Broncos plenty of potential up front if they can push Brown and Warren to improved play. Brown has played left defensive end during his career at Cleveland, a position manned for the Broncos in 2004 by Marco Coleman because of an injury to Trevor Pryce.
================================================== ========

Well the Broncos are definitely gambling this year. While G. Warren has shown he can play if you light a fire under his ass, C. Brown has shown flashes of downright brilliance. If the Broncs can get him to lose about 10-15 lbs, he may last a little longer than Week 3 at the DE spot.

The knocks on Brown are only two: he needs to play angry to realize his potential and the fact that you can set your watch by him going on IR before the 4th game of the year. Here's hoping that his fortune changes in Denver; he's a hell of a player when he's healthy and he's a class guy.

Do we have any Broncos fans out there??

Late.

I wish Courtney all the luck in the world, as opposed to lazy ass Gerard Warren.
