Default Eddie George Comming To Dallas?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A day after being released by the Titans, Eddie George is working on a return to Texas.

The Cowboys are discussing with George a two-year contract structure that, in reality, will be a one-year commitment for approximately $1.5 million, plus incentives, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.

Sources told Werder that George and his agent, Lamont Smith, have scheduled a meeting with Dallas owner Jerry Jones and other team officials for Friday at the Cowboys' Valley Ranch headquarters.

George, who has spent his entire eight year career with the Titans (starting in 1996, when they were the Houston Oilers), reportedly had made signing with the Cowboys his priority, and has declined offers to make visits to other interested teams until he determines Dallas' interest in his services.

This report comes a day after Dallas sources told Werder that the team had only modest interest in the former Tennessee stalwart. According to sources, Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones has maintained interest in signing George since it became apparent he might be released, but head coach Bill Parcells and others were reluctant, fearing George's presence would interfere with the development of rookie running back Julius Jones, the team's top draft choice.

Parcells had been planning to use a rotation system in which Jones would probably play the majority of the time with fullback Richie Anderson playing halfback in third-down passing situations. The acquisition of George would reduce the pressure on the Cowboys to have Jones ready to be the primary ballcarrier when the season opens. George has never missed a game during his career and will set a positive example for Jones in terms of work ethic, preparation and practice habits.

George, who turns 31 this season, rejected the Titans' attempts to reduce his contract this season to $1.5 million. George was willing to accept a reduced contract but wanted at least $2.5 million and security beyond the 2004 season.

"How do we replace [George]? Well, we're going to have to replace him with more than one guy," Reese said. "It's going to be impossible to find one guy to do all the things Eddie did."

That process began on Thursday, when Tennessee agreed to a one-year deal with free agent running back Antowain Smith.

I never thought I would hear this. When he was first released it didn't even cross my mind Dallas actually taking a good look at him. But this would be kick ass. Dallas needs whatever running backs they can get. Even though Eddie wouldn't be my first choice, anything is an upgrade from last season. But I do really want to see what Jones can do. Parcells really likes him. So maybe he is something special. I still don't understand why Dallas slept on all these running backs at the beginning of the season, and now there finally looking at someone. Jerry Jones, please prove all us Cowboys fan wrong by doing something good for once.

I think George's best days are behind him. He's been a workhorse for the Titans carrying the ball at least over 300 times a season but that's alot of hits to take and it caught up to him. He barely gains 1000 yards rushing anymore in a season. His average yards a rush is 3.2 tops and he is not gonna break any big runs.

Yeah the only thing Eddy still has going for him is he's a workhorse, he'll always carry the ball when it's given to him but his production has dropped a lot over the years. His Yard Per Carry is horrible but hey, I hope things will improve for him in Dallas.

That's good for the Cowboys, Eddie is a very solid running back. Very solid, always 1000 yards, and a bunch of carries, niceness.

Default Dreams do come true...

Bill Parcells, Jerry Jones and several other high-ranking members of the Dallas Cowboys made it clear how much they wanted Eddie George.

As soon as the running back became a free agent Wednesday, team officials called George and his agent early and often. While George was flattered, he was still coming to grips with the end of his eight-year relationship with the Tennessee Titans.

So before jumping to a new team, he made some calls of his own, checking out the Cowboys and Parcells with prospective teammates Keyshawn Johnson, Terry Glenn and Marcellus Wiley.

Liking what he heard, George arrived at team headquarters Friday morning. Within hours of meeting Jones in front of a display of the team's five Super Bowl trophies, George was holding up his new No. 27 jersey and talking about hopes of bringing a sixth championship.

"I didn't want to mess around with flying here and flying there. I wanted to find the right fit and this was it,'' George said. ``It felt good to be wanted.''

Negotiations went quickly because George got exactly what he wanted: A one-year contract that immediately paid him $1.5 million, which was what the Titans were offering for this entire season. With incentives, he could make more than the $4.25 million he would have made under his previous contract with Tennessee.

Full story here.

Well... the Cowboys finally have that running back that they so dearly needed... George will be the #1 option, but not an every down back... which you can't really expect him to be at that age... Dallas is looking good so far this year, what else can you really say?
