Default Allen back with cowboys...for now...

Whether he is back in the good graces of coach Bill Parcells remains to be seen, but eight-time Pro Bowl guard Larry Allen is back in the Cowboys' conditioning program after an offseason of trade rumors.

Allen, 32, has been participating in the offseason program for about two weeks now, team and league sources confirmed, and seems set to return to the Cowboys for an 11th season. The decision to rejoin the conditioning sessions came after he met separately with Parcells and owner Jerry Jones a few weeks ago.

In the weeks preceding the draft, and during the lottery as well, Dallas dangled Allen in trade talks and the 10-year veteran met with Raiders and Lions officials and coaches. It is believed the Lions demonstrated more interest, but Allen preferred finishing his career with the Raiders, and declined to renegotiate his contract.

Allen has a base salary of $3.5 million for this season and a lofty salary cap charge of $5.56 million.

Since the end of the draft, the Cowboys have ceased attempting to trade Allen. They plan to have him return to left guard, where he's been a fixture since the club chose him in the second round of the 1994 draft.

That said, Allen will have to be in far better shape this season than he was in 2003, when Parcells questioned his conditioning and nagging injuries. Despite starting all 16 games in '03, Allen did not meet his Pro Bowl-level of play, although he managed, primarily by reputation, to earn an eighth selection to the game.

"I hope he will be able to do [what we need him to do] and that the slate is clean," Parcells said. "But it's going to be different this year, and he knows it."

As early as training camp last summer, Parcells believed Allen was out of shape, and the coach regularly prodded him about his conditioning. Even after Allen removed himself from an Oct. 26 game at Tampa Bay, citing an ankle problem, the Cowboys never listed him on an official injury report for a game.

Allen had played in just five games in 2002, his season concluding with him on injured reserve following ankle surgery.

Well i'm glad he's back. I hope he doesn't be a bitch and hold out or do something like that. I know he's not nearly as good as he once was, but if he can stay healthy he can still be a threat on the line. Plus they can't afford to release him or anything. That would kill their cap.
