Default Sapp close to signing deal with Bengals?

"Warren Sapp is "very close'' to signing a four-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals, his agent Drew Rosenhaus said Friday night, potentially ending his nine-year run as one of the cornerstones of the Tampa Bay defense.

The defensive tackle had been in negotiations with at least seven other NFL teams, Rosenhaus said, since not being immediately re-signed by the Buccaneers. The deal could be done by Saturday, he said.

"They've definitely become the front runner,'' Rosenhaus told The Associated Press. "It could be just a matter of hours.''

Full story here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow... this is completely unexpected, IMO. Although Sapp could be a strong re-inforcement on an improving team... once they realize Kitna should be the starter, they could have a solid offense, and with this guy running the defensive side, and basically the energy of the team... he could take them where they wanna be, and haven't been for about 12 years.

Your thoughts?

Yeah Jaden said it, Sapp is now a Raider.

Here's the story for those who care.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Seven-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Warren Sapp signed a seven-year, $36.6 million contract with the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, ending his nine-year relationship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"The bad news is I won't be back with the Bucs," Sapp said by telephone from Miami. "The good news is I'm a Raider."

The surprise move came only a day after Sapp's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said the one-time NFL defensive player of the year was close to signing a four-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sapp will receive a $7 million signing bonus. He earned $6.6 million last year in the final season of a six-year, $36 million contract he signed in 1998.

Earlier this month, the 31-year-old tackle said he was optimistic about the prospect of re-signing with the Bucs. But that changed when his old team failed to make him an offer during the first week of the free agency period.

Sapp joined the Bucs as first-round draft pick out of Miami in 1995 and -- along with linebacker Derrick Brooks and safety John Lynch -- helped transform the Bucs from a laughingstock into Super Bowl champions.

Lynch was released last week after 11 seasons with Tampa Bay, a move that cleared about $4 million under the NFL salary cap.

Sapp leaves the only pro team he has played for two sacks shy of the franchise record of 78 held by Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon.

Damn, this is shocking. All I was readin was that he was close with the Bengals.

While he isn't the youngest players, he definitely isn't old (like most Raiders). I guess this is a good deal for both, though Sapp seems to have been on the decline since he had a stellar season a few years ago. Maybe this will be a rejuvenation of sorts for him

He had 16.5 sacks in 2000. Since then he hasn't had that many combined in the last 2 or 3 years. There's no Simeon Rice or Booger McFarland to help him out in Oakland, either.

Yes... but there is a Charles Woodson and Phillip Buchanan back there to shut down recievers for them to keep the quarterback in the pocket. He had that in Tampa Bay... but, he has an equally talented secondary in Oakland now also... this should be fun to see... the team he helped beat in the Superbowl 2 years... he now plays for...

Sapp is gonna bring a lot of energy to this team... I can't wait to see him in silver and black, seeing as how I am somewhat of a Raiders fan.

I was really suprised to hear this. For that whole day you heard that the deal with Cincy was just about done. Then all of a sudden this comes out of nowhere. But i'm going to have to agree with Jaden, its going to be hard for him to look good when there's no one there to help him.

Didn't he sign with the Skins half way through last season?

Well the Raiders now have Sapp and Teddy Washington which they stole from my Patriots, so their interior line should be awesome, if they are both used right
