Default Bucs sign Griese

Demonstrating again that coach Jon Gruden loves to load up his roster with veteran quarterbacks, the Tampa Bay Bucs on Wednesday afternoon reached an agreement in principle with free agent Brian Griese, ESPN.com has learned.

Tampa Bay for the second time this week has bolstered its quarterback corps. Longtime New York Giants backup Jason Garrett recently was added to a mix that includes starter Brad Johnson and second-year veteran Chris Simms.

Griese visited with Bucs executives and coaches Monday. The team begins an offseason "quarterback" school next week.

While precise financial details were not yet available, Griese will sign a three-year contract that, in essence, figures to be just a one-year deal. The structure of the contract likely will be similar to the pact Griese signed with Miami last season, in which exorbitant roster bonuses after the first year dictate the team either release him or dramatically rework his deal.

Still hoping to resurrect his career as a starter, and at a position where players oftentimes revive their stock late in their NFL tenure, Griese preferred a one-year arrangement. With such a deal, he will either play well enough this season for the Bucs to consider keeping him, or will be released into free agency again with an opportunity to play elsewhere. The key, of course, is for Griese to earn playing time and perform well when he is presented with an opportunity to display his wares.

A six-year veteran, Griese is expected to earn a little less than $1 million in 2004.

Griese, 28, was due a $5 million roster bonus this spring and was cut by the Dolphins early in the offseason to avoid paying it and to help create cap room. The former Denver Broncos starter appeared in and started five games for the Dolphins last season, completing 74 of 130 passes for 813 yards, with five touchdown passes and six interceptions.

In the past, Griese has enjoyed some terrific outings against Gruden-led teams and the Bucs coach has a long memory for such things.

The former University of Michigan star and son of Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese has started 56 games in six seasons, completing 1,118 of 1,808 passes for 12,576 yards. He has 76 touchdown passes, 59 interceptions and a career passer rating of 83.0.

His best years, of course, were in Denver, where he started 51 games between 1999-2002. Before the '01 season, he signed a $40 million-plus contract that included a team-record $12.6 million signing bonus. But after two seasons in which his performance slumped in part because of a significant shoulder injury, and in which he was involved in a series of embarrassing off-field incidents, the Broncos released Griese last spring.

Brad Johnson will be gone by June 1st cuts.

Griese will play 1-2 years before Chris Simms takes over.

You really think they will cut Johnson? I wouldn't do that. He's better then Griese imo.

This sucks for Griese. He should be a starter and not a second-string bench warmer. He got a bad wrap in Denver because he was not John Elway. Griese should go to Dallas and be number one. Or in Pittsburgh, if we could afford him.

Sure...you can take a run at numbfuck SC or plainjane Josh or complete moron Alex or can't get out of his own way Boston...but I don't agree with you about Barry and it's "Rueben Droughns this" "weed that" "your kids this" "Look at me and my halo over my head that."

Whatever. First of all, you don't have any depth of knowledge about any of that stuff, so you're just talking out of your ass. Secondly, you wouldn't be saying any of that shit if Barry Bonds wasn't some roided up freak who you're in love with.

It's fucking gay. I have better things to do than deal with someone who can't even debate a point, rather changes the subject again and again to deflect the fact that he's dead wrong. It's what dumbass 6th graders do...

I honestly don't give a fuck about your opinion. Like I told Alex, they're just words on a screen. I can't believe you don't get that concept...but okay.

I mean...you're the kind of guy that thinks if you yell louder than the other person, you will win a debate. And that's not new either...I've pretty much thought that about you from day one...

I didn't want to put it that way, but since you want to press on...

Lame dude. Just lame. I have better shit to do. You probably should too...but I'm betting you don't...

Late.
