Here's the story

Flames trade for tough guy Simon

TSN.ca Staff

3/6/2004

The New York Rangers have traded Chris Simon and a seventh round pick in 2004 to the Calgary Flames for Jamie McLennan, Blair Betts and prospect Greg Moore.

The Rangers also claimed forward Josh Green off waivers from the Flames. Flames goaltender Roman Turek also cleared waivers Saturday.

Simon, 32, signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Rangers in July. In 65 games played this season, the enforcer has 14 goals, 9 assists, a plus-14 rating and 225 penalty minutes.

``We have been interested in Chris for some time,'' said Flames GM and head coach Darryl Sutter. ``He is a big strong player who will also provide us with an offensive contribution and is having a good season.

``Chris has been a member of a Stanley Cup team and has experience that will benefit our club.''

Green, 26, has split playing time between the Flames and the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL, appearing in 36 games with the Flames this season and recording two goals and four assists. Green was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2nd round (30th overall) in 1996 and spent time in Long Island, Edmonton and Washington before joining the Flames in 2003.

McLennan, 32, has appeared in 26 games for the Flames this season, recording 12 wins, nine losses and three ties with a 2.19 GAA and .910 save percentage. The Minnesota Wild traded McLennan to the Flames for a 9th round selection in 2002.

Betts, 24, was drafted by the Flames in the 2nd round (33rd overall) in 1998. In 20 games played this season, the Edmonton native has recorded one goal and two assists.

Moore, 19, was the Flames' 5th round draft pick (143rd overall) in 2003. He has nine goals and seven assists in 33 games with the University of Maine this season.

================================================== ==============

I hope Calgary makes the playoffs, 8 years is too damn long for any franchise.

I never thought I'd see it, but it looks like the Rangers are serious about rebuilding.

This was a great pickup for the Flames. But they won't do anything in the playoffs.
