Default Leetch heading t.o...

Maple Leafs acquire Brian Leetch

TSN.ca Staff

3/3/2004

The New York Rangers have parted ways with one of the franchise's most celebrated players, trading veteran defenceman Brian Leetch to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Maxim Kondratiev, Jarkko Immonen and draft picks, pending a trade call with the NHL, TSN has learned.

Leetch spent all 16 seasons of his NHL career in New York, with more than 1,100 games played with the Blueshirts.

A two-time Norris Trophy winner as the league's top defenceman, Leetch was remembered most for his performance in the 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs when he led all skaters with 11 goals and 23 assists in 23 playoff games. He was named the 1994 Conn Smythe Trophy winner as Most Valuable Player in the postseason after helping lead the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup since 1940.

Leetch, 36, has another year on his contract at $6.4 million US.

More to follow.

Well this sucks...well it always sucks to see a good player's career being tainted by going to a shit team. Once again, another player the Stars missed out on... And once again, another good player that its traded for nothing at all.

Ah well, that still only gives them one decent defenseman. lol

man, the leafs gave up far too much for Leetch.

a 1st rounder and a second rounder? i mean really...... if they keep trading away their picks..... in a few yers they're going to have no youth and no depth......

Immonen was the Finnish Elite league payer of the year....he's a smart forward with and without the puck........ and our buddy Maxim... he's quite the solid player as well.

oh wow, the leafs get an aging defenseman past his prime.........

man, the lefs got hosed.

good job, Glen Sather..... you made the rangers quite improved over the last few days....

You really think the Leafs got ripped off?

Draft picks really don't mean much in hockey. The draft is pure luck. Its not like other sports where a first round pick can come in and make an big impact right away.

Even though I know the Leafs won't win the cup, they think they can. And I mean, you don't know whats going to happen 5, 6, 7 years down the line when these prospects and draft picks are going to come into effect, and maybe make an impact in the league. So they have to build a team thats going to win the cup now.

but they've been doing this for years...... as in they have an old team who has a decent amount of talent..... but not enough to put them over the top. you know, the whole close but no cigar schtick.

look at last years trade deadline for them. Housley, Wesley and Gilmour made how little impact for them? GIlmour played what? 4 minutes? Housley was inneffective and Wesley was average at best. You'd think they'd learn from their mistakes......

and for the record.... they should have kept Boyes and McCauley.... Nolan is overrated.

I'm not saying that the Leafs have a good team. They have a shit team thats overachieving. But i'm just saying that the team its self thinks they can win the cup this year...or the next. So I mean, if were the GM, and I truely believed that I could win the cup this year, I wouldn't even think twice about trading for Leech. Just think..they haven't won the cup in like 30 years. They will do anything right about now to snap that. Sure there old, and trading about possible (and thats a big possible) good players isn't going to make you younger. But with all the free agents, no one stays with their orginal team anymore, and its pretty easy to fill in those gaps with younger players.
