Blues: We're not trading Pronger

Canadian Press

3/3/2004

The St. Louis Blues are not shopping star defenceman Chris Pronger ahead of next Tuesday's NHL trade deadline, despite rumours to the contrary.

"All I'll I can tell is that I don't know where those rumours are coming from," an agitated Larry Pleau, general manager of the Blues, told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. "We would like Chris to be here a long time."

The rumours seem to have started because of Pronger's contract status. The all-star defenceman will be a restricted free agent July 1 and the Blues must tender a $9.5-million US qualifying offer by midnight June 30 in order to retain his services, otherwise he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

The Anaheim Mighty Ducks balked at giving Paul Kariya a $10-million qualifying offer last summer and he promptly signed a free-agent contract with Colorado. Ironically, Winnipeg-based Don Baizley is the agent for both players.

The other option for Pleau would be to sign Pronger to a new multi-year contract worth less than the qualifying offer and that appears to be the plan.

"We've said all along, we want Chris to be with us for a very long time and I don't know where all of these rumours are starting," said Pleau, whose club was four points out of a playoff spot entering Wednesday's NHL games.

The six-foot-six 218-pound Pronger is having another all-star season after missing all but five games last year recovering from a serious wrist problem. He has 43 points (13-30) and 80 penalty minutes in 65 games this season and will surely be nominated for another Norris Trophy.

The 29-year-old from Dryden, Ont., won the Hart Trophy as NHL most valuable player in 1999-2000 and the Norris as top defenceman. He has 93 goals, 296 assists and a career plus-120 rating in 707 games.

Interesting...

They would be smart to trade him. There not making the playoffs, and this is the last year of his contract. So they could at least trade him so they can get something in return for him, instead of just losing him as a free agent. And from what it sounds like, there not going to give him the money he's looking for. So it only makes sense to trade him.

Or they could just be pulling the 'oh, were not going to trade you' then he's gone a couple days later.
