Default NFL to revamp TV in 2006

NFL wants later times, dates

By Rudy Martzke, USA TODAY

Although changes could be a few years away, NFL fans shouldn't get too comfortable on their couches.
In the next TV contract for 2006, February might be a month with more playoff games. And fans could have an extra hour of Sunday leisure.

Moving back the start of the season at least a week and pushing back kickoff times for Sunday games are among the proposals former ESPN/ABC Sports President Steve Bornstein has asked the networks to consider in negotiations. Bornstein, hired as NFL executive vice president, is charged with boosting the rights fees from the current eight-year, $17.8 billion deal.

It is expected that negotiations could be conducted this fall, a year sooner than scheduled.

Two high-ranking network executives outlined the proposal, but Bornstein and officials from Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC/ESPN and HBO declined comment.

"I am aware of some of these discussion points," TV consultant Neal Pilson said Thursday. "I think it makes sense the league is consulting with its partners on how to improve the television packages. I'm sure the networks welcome being consulted."

IMG's Barry Frank said, "I certainly respect the fact the NFL should explore every possibility. I'd think everybody would agree on moving up the negotiations.

"It's a good time to be negotiating. The ratings are strong and business has picked up."

Other proposals the NFL has floated to the networks:

Move back starting times for Sunday afternoon games on Fox and CBS an hour to 2 and 5 p.m. ET. A similar move in playoff games has resulted in higher ratings. CBS would probably be against the plan because it would further delay "60 Minutes," the network's highly successful news program.

Drop the AFC/NFC delineations on Sunday afternoon games. Fox and CBS would alternately choose games when the schedule is determined in April.

Move back the start of the season one to two weeks, with the goal of moving some of the playoffs into the February TV ratings sweeps period.

Move ABC's Monday Night Football to Thursday. That probably won't happen as MNF's ratings improved last year and NBC and CBS have traditionally had stronger counter programming on Thursday.

Add a fifth TV package of games, possibly on Thursday nights. TNT, HBO and Fox/Comcast figure to be interested in a new package that might be valued at $500 million to $800 million a year. If the NFL obtains 3% to 5% increases in the present packages, it likely would not pursue an extra TV partner.

I don't know what's more impressive....the fact that the NHL tv contract is about 17.8 MILLION, or the fact that MLB, NBA, NHL, and NASCAR together don't equal the NFL's deal.

I like the Noon and 3pm kickoffs here in the midwest. Waiting another hour would be like waiting another week!

Good idea, but they must include ABC in this. No need to watch a MNF game in December with two teams that have been out of the playoff race since mid-October.

Would hate to have to wait longer to start, but would love to be watching into Feb.

Thursday is the big money night for ALL the networks. Friday is out because of high school games around the country. I say keep it on Mondays, but consider Tuesday or Wednesday if they want to move.

I don't think HBO would be a good choice. Despite the success of mainstream show slike "Sex..." and "Sopranos" HBo still isn't that prominant in households.

I don't know how close Comcast and FSN are to a deal, so that really leaves TNT. But WHEN would be a problem, due to their deal with the NBA.

Very interesting, the NFL has been making a lot of changes lately, with the salary cap increase, and now this, two very big things.

I agree with almost all of your points, Jaden... like, as to why they would even think about putting games on HBO... when not even that many sports fan have extended cable channels, like me, I have cable, just regular, you know, all the ESPN's, just the basics, if I wanna see a movie I go out. It was bad enough people without cable couldn't even watch the ProBowl... like it was that important anyways, I guess.

I thought they were even considering extending the regular season to 19 games? I would take a season extension, rather than starting it earlier, it would interfere with my baseball...

And, to any mods who read this, no offense to Jaden, but this might be a better topic in the Sports Forum.

Well i'm moving this tp sports.

First, I don't know how moving the games back an hour would help ratings. That would suck if that happens though. That means I would have to wait a hour longer every week to see the Cowboys win!

I like the idea of Fox and CBS alternating games. I never really like the idea of one network showing one conference. That way you don't get to see highlights from the other conference during games.

I still don't really know what the NFL is trying to do something different with t.v. They have the most sucessful t.v deal in like all of sports. So why change something that isn't broke?

Rebel.....your dead on with wanting to extend the regualr season to 18 or 19 games. Eliminate the 4 game pre-season. We don't need it. There is no off-season anymore. Guys take a couple weeks off right after the season ends, to rest, and then it' back to year round training.

The only thing 4 games does is injure players needlessly. I know guys would much rather go down in week 1 of the regular season, than get taken out in the pre-season.

We don't need 4 pre-season games a fans, and the players certainly don't.

The thing that has the best promise, is the alternating schedules. If they include ABC, it will be perfect. It won't garuntee that the teams playing in December will ALL be vying for a playoff spot, but it's a better plan than taking teams from last season and hoping they are still gonna be good.

Wait until after the draft and both waves of free agency to see who is good on paper, and let ABC grab those games for MNF.

I still like my plan better.

!. Make it a 2 preseason schedule and let the teams scrimage against each other prior to that instead to get the starters up and running. Make preseason available so the rookies and benchwarmers get a chance to earn a spot and get some playing experience. If they need anymore than that, send them to CFL jor NFL europe for experience.

2. give each team 2 bye weeks a season.

3. Add a Thurs night game.

4. Show 2 games each sat. on each network for a total of 4, after thanksgiving day and through the playoffs.

5. Do not change the start times of games. That's stupid, but it would help me from having to wake up so goddamned early.

6. Get rid of anything that has to do with teeny bopper music and mtv type shit forever.

7. Give MNF a chance to change games a week prior for better match ups. I know this would piss everyone else off, so work out some profit sharing type compensation.

8. Fix the problem with not showing hometeam games if they aren't sold out or whatever that fucking rule is. It pisses me off.

there are lots more things I'd change to, but thats the beginning.
