Default Vladdy finally has new home...

The Vladimir Guerrero sweepstakes concluded in surprise fashion Sunday with another twist that has the free-agent outfielder headed west.

The Anaheim Angels agreed to terms with Guerrero late Saturday night and will sign the former Montreal Expo contingent on his passing a physical exam this week.

The deal is for five years and worth $70 million, The Los Angeles Times reported. The Angels have not confirmed the deal.

"As a matter of policy, we don't comment on speculation," Angels vice president of communications Tim Mead told The Associated Press on Saturday night.

The Mets and the Orioles had been believed to be the only teams seriously pursuing Guerrero.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the Orioles reportedly offered a five-year, $67.5 million deal after originally making a five-year, $65 million proposal. The Mets reportedly offered a $30 million deal over three years with plenty of incentives.

But Mets general manager Jim Duquette said Saturday that he was informed by Guerrero's agent, Arn Tellem, that Guerrero would sign a multiyear deal with another team.

The offense-minded Orioles are turning their attention to continued talks with Pudge Rodriguez, although deal is not imminent.

Earlier Saturday, the World Series champion Florida Marlins were thought to be the front-runner to sign Guerrero. They reportedly had made a one-year offer for at least $10 million, and Guerrero's first choice was believed to be Florida, the Newark Star-Ledger reported.

Guerrero, who turns 28 in February, was on the disabled list from June 6 to July 21 last season because of a herniated disk. He was terrific after returning, finishing the season with a .330 average, 25 home runs and 79 RBI for the Expos.

His addition to the Angels will have a domino effect on their lineup. The Angels' outfield would look like recently signed Jose Guillen in left, Garret Anderson moving from left to center, and Guerrero playing right. The Angels already decided to move Tim Salmon from right field to designated hitter, Darin Erstad from center to first base.

The Angels went 77-85 and missed the playoffs last season, one year after winning the World Series. But they've been busy this offseason under new owner Arte Moreno, who also signed free-agent pitchers Bartolo Colon and Kelvim Escobar along with Guillen.

Colon got a $51 million, four-year contract last month after Escobar received $18.75 million over three years in November.

Angels general manager Bill Stoneman said then, "We had our sights set on pitching and I think we accomplished that. I would say that, conservatively, we're not finished yet."

Guillen signed a $6 million, two-year contract in December.

Good for him, about time he got out of Montreal.

He was wasting his career away up there so it's good to see him move to a contender.

Well the angels sure as hell slid under the radar on this one and in a shocking move. I'm happy for them and looking at their line up next season, a.l. west is going to be a tough one to win.
