Default Royals eyeing more talent

The Kansas City Royals are front-runners to sign free-agent slugger Juan Gonzalez, his agent says.

Gonzalez, an outfielder with 429 career homers, played only 82 games for the Texas Rangers last year before a torn muscle in his right calf ended his season July 20. He hit .294 with 24 homers and 70 RBI.

Alan Nero, who represents Gonzalez, said from Chicago on Sunday that "about three" teams of "about six" initially interested were still in negotiations.

"I would clearly say that Kansas City is the front-runner at the moment," Nero told The Kansas City Star.

Nero and Allard Baird, the Royals' general manager, both said they expect a decision this week.

The Royals have also shown interest in two other free-agent outfielders, Raul Mondesi, who hit 24 homers last season for the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks, and Jay Payton, who had 28 homers with the Colorado Rockies.

as a Royals fan, i'm torn on this one.....they didn't keep Ibanez, but they are willing to sign someone else for the same money he got, basically.....Gonzalez' bat would be a nice addition to the lineup, but his defense leaves a lot to be desired.....

Well it's clear to see with the twins losing everyone this off season that they have and now the royals making all the moves that they have, the a.l. central is theres lock, stocked and barrel imo.

Two-time American League MVP Juan Gonzalez agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals that guarantees him $4.5 million.

The free-agent outfielder gets $4 million next season, and the deal includes a mutual option for 2005 at $7 million. If the Royals decline the option, Gonzalez would receive a $500,000 buyout.

In addition, he can earn $2 million in performance bonuses this year and $1.5 million in 2005

This is going to be a hit or miss move here for the Royals. Depending on which juan steps up it could be the steal of the off season for them. Then again with the loss of players on the twins team, the only team with a half ass threat towards the royals this season is the white sox and that's even a stretch.
