Default Knicks & Suns make trade

Quote:
The Knicks and Suns have agreed to a multiplayer trade Monday that would return Stephon Marbury to his hometown.

New York would acquire Marbury, Penny Hardaway, and Cezary Trybanski from Phoenix for Antonio McDyess, Howard Eisley, Charlie Ward, Maciej Lampe, the rights to Milos Vujanic, and cash.

The Suns also would receive two first-round draft picks -- the Knicks' first-round pick in the 2004 draft, which is unprotected, and a future conditional first-rounder, ESPN.com has learned.

If the deal is finalized, it would then require the NBA's approval.

The trade would be the fourth of Marbury's career. The Brooklyn native was drafted by Milwaukee and immediately traded to Minnesota, where he subsequently forced a trade to New Jersey.

The Nets traded Marbury to Phoenix for Jason Kidd, and he now is headed to the Knicks in the first major move made by new team president Isiah Thomas.

If the trade is finalized, it would represent a major shakeup of both teams. Phoenix, in exchange for its best player, would be gaining salary cap flexibility that would allow the Suns to rebuild a team that was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last season after missing the postseason a year earlier.

The contracts of McDyess and Ward expire at the end of this season, and Ward has a buyout clause that can be exercised before Jan. 10. Eisley is under contract for three more seasons; Vujanic, the starting point guard on the Yugoslavian team that won the 2002 World Championships, is playing in Europe.

Marbury, one of the league's best point guards, is averaging a team high 20.8 points for the Suns, who are in last place in the Pacific Division. Hardaway, a former All-Star, is in the final year of his contract and has been coming off the bench for the Suns.

McDyess, formerly of the Suns, returned to the court in December after missing more than a year because of knee surgery. He lost his spot in the Knicks' starting lineup to Kurt Thomas, thereby becoming expendable.

Eisley, who recently lost his starting job to Frank Williams, did not play in the Knicks' 95-85 loss to New Jersey on Sunday night.

Ward has been with the Knicks for 10 seasons, the second longest tenure of any player who spent his career with one NBA team.
It seems that Isiah isn't wasting time in making some moves around new york and this seems to be a damn good trade.

Phoenix has given up on the season and begun the rebuilding process.....the Knicks have today's version of Isaiah and Dumars, with Laimbeer (Kurt Thomas) in the middle.....he's rebuilding the Bad Boys.....too bad.....

I agree that this is a good move. Isiah is taking a program that has been left in the dark since the days of Ewing and turning it around. Adding penny and marbury can only help matters, get penny's career back on track and take in van horn, suddenly new york looks to be a threat in the east.

They are in 10th place in the East, they can easily make the playoffs.

Another thing involves Knicks coach Don Chaney. On the Knicks staff is Brendan Malone, the Raptors coach from when Isiah was there. Do you think Chaney will get axed by Isiah in favor for Malone

I don't follow the NBA to closely but I have always wondered what the hell ever happened to Penny Hardaway? Wasn't that guy supposed to the next big thing back in the day when he was on Orlando?

I could be wrong, I'm just going off what I remember.

Like I said I'm not really into basketball so more than likely I'm talking out of my ass here.

Yes he was. I remeber during the Shaq/Penny days of Orlando. He was hyped big time by Reebok (Little Penny) and was the Kobe of the 90s. When Shaq left Orlando, Penny couldn't do it all by himself and got injured a lot.

I don't see Chaney lasting past the all-star break and won't be surprised if Isiah takes over as coach. Penny basically didn't fair well in the west but could easily replenish himself back in the east. Funny how that happens sometimes.

Isiah doesn't want ward, that's why he was part of the trade.
