Default St Johns fires Jarvis.....

ESPN.com news services
NEW YORK -- Mike Jarvis was fired Friday as men's basketball coach at St. John's, off to one of the worst starts in school history and beset by problems off the court as well.

Jarvis was in his sixth season with the Red Storm and had a 110-61 record, including 2-4 this season.

He will be replaced by associate head coach Kevin Clark. The Red Storm play at Georgia Tech on Sunday.

Jarvis met with the players Friday to give them the news after being informed of the school's decision Thursday night, ESPN.com's Andy Katz has learned. His son, Mike Jarvis II, also will leave the staff.

Jarvis still had next year remaining on his contract.

Mike Jarvis couldn't shake St. John's out of its early-season funk.

St. John's athletic director Dave Wegrzyn scheduled a news conference later Friday.

The Red Storm started the season 1-4, something that last happened in the 1922-23 season. Losses to Marquette and Duke, both ranked teams, surrounded consecutive home losses to Fairfield and Hofstra and the lone win, at Stony Brook.

The crowds at Alumni Hall started chanting "Fire Jarvis" early in most of this season's games and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski chastised his fans when they did the same at Cameron Indoor Stadium earlier this month.

"Unfortunately, in too many places we've lost sight of things," Jarvis said after the 79-58 loss on Dec. 6. "We've got schools in Division IV that are yelling the same chant. It's a disgrace to the game and Mike Krzyzewski knows that more than anybody."

There were off-the-court problems as well. Senior guard Willie Shaw was arrested on marijuana possession charges last month and kicked off the team. Shaw also was suspended for four games at the end of his sophomore season after testing positive for marijuana.

Junior college transfer Grady Reynolds was arrested just days before the 2002-03 season started on charges he attacked a female student in a dormitory. This summer, Reynolds was ordered to perform community service and undergo anger management counseling to settle the charges, which would be dismissed in six months if he was not arrested again.

Jarvis replaced Fran Fraschilla, who was fired after the 1997-98 season. He spent the previous eight seasons at George Washington and was at Boston University for five seasons before that. His career record for 18-plus seasons is 364-201. He took Boston University to the NCAA tournament twice and George Washington three times.

Jarvis led the Red Storm to the regional finals of the NCAA tournament his first season and they lost in the second round the next year. St. John's also went to the tournament in 2002, losing in the first round, and the Red Storm won the NIT last season, finishing with a 21-13 record by closing with a 7-1 run after going 2-6 in February.

Jarvis first came to national prominence as Patrick Ewing's high school coach at Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Mass.

That guy has been worthless since Felipe Lopez left. Then again, Felipe has been worthless since leaving St. John's, too.

Late.

Such a shame about that. I became a Jarvis fan while he was coaching at George Washington and had one of the best centers at the time that flopped in the NBA in yinka dare. He'll get another good coaching job though.

you knew it was coming but didn't expect it to happen this soon. Granted he is a good coach but Jesus Christ how do you not recruit better in NYC which is a hotbed of talent?

I think he'll wind up next in the big ten, acc or big 12. He's a damn good coach but nobody wants to go to most schools in new york. The big east schools to go to are uconn. and pitt. Fact is a lot of the top highschool players in nyc, choose the nba now which is another good reason. I think he'd be better off in a bigger conference.

I hear what you are saying about UConn and Pitt but recruiters from other colleges who went to scout NYC high school players even said there was no St John's people present most of the time scouting these kids. I mean you could put alittle effort into trying to recruit these kids and maybe change their minds about leaving the City for other places.

Fact is, it's not like St. John's has done anything over the last 15 years. Jarvis brought his name there and got tickets to sell. Granted they could've done better but you can't blame one man fior a piss poor program. How is it gonzaga out of spokane washington gets top players over washington state and washington. Think about it,.
