Default Spurs give Popovich extension

SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has signed a multiyear contract extension.

The agreement announced today extends Popovich's contract through the 2007-08 season.

A spokesman for the Spurs declined to release additional details.

Popovich also serves as the team's executive vice president of basketball operations.

He says he's fortunate to have a group of players and a coaching staff that he calls: "quite special."

Popovich -- in seven seasons as head coach -- has led the Spurs to a pair of NBA championships.

He posted his 300th win in January against Los Angeles.

The Spurs are on a seven-game winning streak and tomorrow play Toronto.

I hate the spurs so I don't care, but as an objective sports fan, this is a wise move on the part of spurs management and a good call to have made.
