Default Hurricanes Fire Maurice

The Carolina Hurricanes have fired coach Paul Maurice, ESPN The Magazine's EJ Hradek reports Monday.

The team has called a news conference for 4 p.m. ET.

The Sports Network reports on its Web site that the Hurricanes' new coach is former Islanders head coach Peter Laviolette. It also reports that Carolina assistant coaches Randy Ladouceur and Don Edwards were fired and replaced by Kevin McCarthy and Jeff Daniels.

Maurice, the second-youngest and longest-tenured coach in the NHL, was in his ninth season with the Hurricanes. He is the club's all-time leader in regular season (268) and playoff (17) wins and regular season (674) and playoff (35) games coached. Maurice led the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002, where they lost in five games to the Detroit Red Wings.

The Hurricanes, who just completed a 1-2-0-1 road trip, are 8-12-8-2 this season. They currently are in fourth place in the Southeast Division and are 13th in the Eastern Conference.

Good move by the Canes. They needed a change. Ever since their cup run they have been really struggling. But this still isn't going to put them on the winning side...

I've been waiting for this since the middle of last season. I can't stand the canes, but it was a good move on managements part to get a new coach in there.
