Default A-Rod wins AL MVP

NEW YORK -- Texas Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez became the second player from a last-place team to win a Most Valuable Player award, beating Carlos Delgado and Jorge Posada in American League voting announced Monday.

Rodriguez received 242 points in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Delgado had 210 points and Posada 194.

Showing the split among the writers, 10 players received first-place votes, one short of the record set in the 1947 NL vote and matched in the 1977 AL vote.

Rodriguez was picked first on six ballots, the fewest for an MVP winner since the New York Yankees' Mickey Mantle in 1957. Delgado and Posada got five firsts each.

The only other player on a last-place team to win an MVP was the Chicago Cubs' Andre Dawson in 1987.

Rodriguez, second in the voting in 1996 and last year, was the only player picked on every ballot. He hit .298, tied for the major league lead with 47 homers, and led the AL in runs (124) and slugging percentage (.600). He had 118 RBI, second in the AL to Delgado's 145.

Rodriguez was in his third season with Texas, which finished last in the AL West at 71-91. He joined the Rangers after the 2000 season when Texas gave him a record $252 million, 10-year contract and has led the league in homers in all three years.

Delgado hit .302 with 42 homers for Toronto, while Posada batted .281 for the Yankees with 30 homers and 101 RBI.

Shannon Stewart, traded from Toronto to Minnesota during the season, was fourth with three first-place votes and 140 points. Boston's David Ortiz was fifth with four firsts and 130 points.

Boston's Manny Ramirez and Nomar Garciaparra, Toronto's Vernon Wells, Oakland's Miguel Tejada and the Yankees' Jason Giambi got one first-place vote each. Tejada was last year's MVP.

Rodriguez gets a $500,000 bonus added to his $21 million salary, and Stewart gets $25,000 for finishing fourth.

Because he finished 10th, Seattle second baseman Bret Boone gets an automatic $250,000 raise to $8.25 million.

Yeah, it's way over due for this man, IMO... he should have won last year, but it's not my choice now is it? :-P

I also think Shannon Stewart had a legitimate chance, he was a great great great addition, when he joined the Twins they were in like 3rd place in their division, they made an incredible run toward the end of the season, but when you gotta play the All-Stars in the first round of the playoffs, it can get tough.

I still wonder where A-Rod will end up next year...

Delgado should have won it, A-Rod was on such a shit team and I think it's unfair to give it to him.

At least the days had like 89 wins or something.

A-Rod makes so much money and he's on a terrible team so he didn't deserve it.

the Blue-Jays stayed in the AL east race for a little while and delgado was a big part of that so He should have won it.

He deserves it completey, baseball is a team game, there are 9 players that start a game, if A-Rod had at least 1 other person who put up decent numbers they would have won a lot more than they did.

Delgado has a supporting cast, including a Cy Young winner in Roy Halladay... what im saying is that no matter how many home runs he can hit, or great plays he can make in the field, he will never be to able to win the game for his team, he needs some support... that's why if I'm A-Rod I am hoping to go to Boston.

Rodriguez - 47 home run's, 118 RBI's, .298, 30 doubles, 364 total bases

Delgado - 42 home run's, 145 RBI's, .302, 38 doubles, 338 total bases

Statisticaly he might have deserved it, but Delgado has much better of a team around him, that get on base, into scoring position, etc.

A-Rod isn't helping his cause by taking up so much of the payroll either.

But Delgado doesn't deserve the MVP just because his team was better than Rodriguez's... if that was the case Shannon Stewart should have got a lot more points than he did, he went to the Twins when they were like 3rd in their division, he would always come through in the clutch, even if he didn't have massive stats like Delgado and Rodriguez, he always came through when it mattered the most for his team, hopefully the Twins can also go out this off-season though, and add more pieces to help out Stewart next year.
