Default Maddux, Wells File for Free Agency

Wednesday, October 29, 2003

Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux filed for free agency again Wednesday, and New York Yankees left-hander David Wells filed provisionally, not waiting for the team's decision on his 2004 option.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kevin Millwood, traded by the Braves after the 2002 season, also was among the 16 players who filed, raising the total to 149 in the four days since the World Series ended.

Maddux, a four-time Cy Young Award winner, also filed for free agency after last season but couldn't find a multiyear deal to his liking. He accepted Atlanta's offer of salary arbitration and agreed to a one-year deal worth $14.75 million. The 37-year-old right-hander then went 16-11 with a 3.96 ERA.

Millwood, who made $9.9 million with the Phillies, went 14-12 with a 4.01 ERA, pitching a no-hitter against San Francisco on April 27.

The Yankees have a $6 million option on Wells' contract with a $1 million buyout and have until Nov. 15 to exercise the option.

"We filed David on a conditional basis to make sure his rights under the collective bargaining agreement are protected," said Wells' agent, Gregg Clifton.

In his second season since returning to the Yankees, Wells was 15-7 with a 4.14 ERA. But he left Game 5 of the World Series after only one inning because of back spasms, and New York lost to Florida 6-4. The Marlins then won the Series with a 2-0 victory in Game 6.

Wells, a favorite of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, was fined $100,000 by the team in March because of his autobiography, which general manager Brian Cashman concluded "did tarnish the Yankee image."

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Pat Hentgen, 7-8 with a 4.09 ERA, also filed after the team declined his $4 million option and gave him a $300,000 buyout.

Chicago Cubs second baseman Mark Grudzielanek filed after the team turned down a $6 million option and gave him a $500,000 buyout. Discussions are continuing.

"We certainly have interest, and I think he would say the same," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "Both sides feel like there's a possibility he'll be back."

On Tuesday, Brian Jordan, Shane Reynolds and Brent Mayne filed for free agency after their 2004 options were declined.

Jordan's $10.5 million option was declined by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will give the outfielder a $2.5 million buyout.

Reynolds' $3 million mutual option was turned down, and the right-hander gets a $100,000 buyout from Atlanta.

Mayne's $3 million option wasn't exercised by the Kansas City Royals, and the catcher gets a $250,000 buyout.

I see Maddux either winding up with the Padres or D-Backs
