Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA -- Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed on a $76.7 million, four-year contract extension, a team source said Tuesday.

The deal will keep the three-time NBA scoring champion in Philadelphia through the 2008-09 season.

The team has scheduled a news conference for 6 p.m. before a party for season-ticket holders at the Wachovia Center. The contract extension was first reported on the Philadelphia Inquirer's Web site.

The extension, which is to begin in 2005-06, marks the second time Iverson has signed a contract extension at maximum money under salary cap rules. Iverson could have exercised an option in his current deal after this season, when he is scheduled to make $13.5 million. He will collect $14.625 million in 2004-05.

Under the new extension, Iverson, 28, will receive $16.4 million in 2005-06 with annual 12.5-percent increases. He will be paid $21.9 million in the 2008-09 campaign.

The extension will take Iverson through his 13th season. He has said he would like to play his entire career in Philadelphia.

Last season, Iverson played all 82 games for the first time in his career and averaged 27.6 points last season, helping Philadelphia finish 48-34 and advance to the second round of the playoffs. He was third in the NBA in scoring and led the league in steals for the third straight year.

In seven seasons, Iverson is averaging 27.0 points and 5.6 assists. This summer, he helped the U.S. team qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics and win a gold medal in last mont's FIBA Tournament of America.

He averaged 14.3 points and shot 56 percent from the field before missing the last two games of the tournament with a sprained right thumb.

The top overall pick out of Georgetown in 1996, Iverson was the 1997 Rookie of the Year. He was the NBA's MVP in 2000-01, when he led the 76ers to the Eastern Conference championship for the first time since 1983.

Among players with 400 or more games, Iverson, a four-time All-Star, has the fifth-highest scoring average in NBA history.

Iverson had a contentious relationship with former 76ers coach Larry Brown, who left to coach the Detroit Pistons after last season. Iverson gets along well with new coach Randy Ayers, who was Brown's assistant.
