Default New York Superbowl bid improves

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority said Tuesday it had reached an agreement with the New York Giants on renovations to Giants Stadium, a move officials hope will bolster the state's chances of hosting the Super Bowl in 2008.

Improvements to the stadium are widely viewed as necessary for the NFL to consider selecting New Jersey as the site of what would be the first outdoor Super Bowl in a cold weather city.

George Zoffinger, president of the sports authority, was still negotiating with the Giants on Sept. 12, even as his agency submitted a proposal that day to host the game.

Key negotiating points included the Giants' demand to manage the stadium. However, Zoffinger, who appears to be guiding the sports authority into profitability for the first time in its history this year, had ruled that out, wanting to avoid any position that could lose money for the agency. It was not immediately clear how the control issue was resolved.
