CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jake Delhomme will be Carolina's new quarterback, replacing Rodney Peete just in time to face defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay.

"Every game is so tough in this league, but what better way to get your first start than to go against the world champions," Delhomme said Monday. "They have certainly made a lot of good quarterbacks look bad."

Delhomme earned the start after replacing Peete in the second half of Sunday's 24-23 victory over Jacksonville.

Down 17-0 when he entered the game, Delhomme threw three touchdown passes, including the game winner on fourth-and-11 with 16 seconds to play, to rally Carolina.

"It would have been tough not to start him," coach John Fox said. "It was very evident that he sparked our offense."

Delhomme, who spent the past five years as a backup in New Orleans, signed a two-year contract worth $4 million during the offseason for the right to compete with Peete for Carolina's starting quarterback job.

Peete won the preseason battle despite mediocre play and Delhomme started Sunday No. 2 on the depth chart.

But he played the entire second half and finished 12-of-20 for 122 yards passing and touchdown passes of 13 yards to Muhsin Muhammad, 24 yards to Steve Smith and the 12 yard game-winner to Ricky Proehl. He also had two interceptions.

Peete -- and the entire Carolina offense -- struggled mightily in the first half. The Panthers earned a first down on the first play of the game, a 20-yard Stephen Davis run, but Peete failed to move them again after that. He was sacked three times, went 4-for-10 for 19 yards and led the Panthers to a total of 36 yards in the first half.

The quarterback change was made at halftime.

Wow Peete got pulled quicker than I expected. I thought by Week 6 the latest Delhomme would be starting. Delhomme showed flashes of being a good QB while in New Orleans and now he got his chance to start
