Default Titans lose Nedney for season

Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Joe Nedney tore a ligament in his non-kicking leg and faces surgery that will end his season and send the Tennessee Titans scrambling for a replacement.

Coach Jeff Fisher said Nedney prefers to have surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament as soon as possible, the option the Titans prefer even though that means he will miss the rest of the season.

Fisher also said quarterback Steve McNair sprained his left knee during Sunday night's game 25-20 victory over Oakland and will be questionable for practice. Tight end Frank Wycheck also suffered his second concussion in less than a month.

Nedney is in the third year of a five-year contract, and had just kicked a 50-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. He was hurt on the ensuing kickoff when he tackled the returner.

The kicker was able to walk off the field and was on the sideline wearing a knee brace in the second half.

Punter Craig Hentrich, who kicked 39 field goals while at Notre Dame, replaced Nedney and made three field goals, tying his career high. He kicked a career-high 49-yarder as the first half expired and added kicks of 34 and 33 yards.

But Fisher said Hentrich is not an option now.

"Craig showed what he's capable of doing. We're looking for someone, if that person is out there, to do the field goal and kickoff duties for us," Fisher said.

Plenty of kickers with NFL experience are available. The Titans won't be calling people like Neil Rackers, released last week by Cincinnati, because they have almost no room available under the salary cap to sign a proven kicker.

Fisher said their list includes young kickers with one or two years' experience and strong legs who have been in training camps.

"We may not have any choice financially, but we'll make the right decision as far as which one we're going to sign. If he can't get it done, we'll get another one," Fisher said.

Kicker has been a key position on this team under Fisher, who likes to play defense and win games at the end. Nedney kicked five game-winning field goals in his two seasons with Tennessee, including the Titans' divisional playoff victory over Pittsburgh last January.

This franchise hasn't been a team to rotate kickers. Al Del Greco was with the team from 1991 through 2000 before the Titans signed Nedney.

Nedney isn't the only Titans player whose season is on doubt.

Fisher said Wycheck suffered a mild concussion -- his second in a month -- from a hit he doesn't recall on Sunday night. Wycheck also was knocked out by a hit in the second exhibition on Aug. 16, and he visited a specialist for clearance following what he estimated as the 10th concussion of his career.

"We're going to have to basically shut him down, evaluate him and give him some time to fully recover," Fisher said.

Wycheck needs 11 receptions to become the fourth NFL tight end with 500 career catches.

I was LMAO when that punter came out and the stat said, "hasn't tried a field goal since 2000" and he splits the uprights from 50 yards out anyway. Then procedes to go 3 for 3 on the rest of the night. That's classic man.
