Lehtinen gets extension

Friday, September 05, 2003
The Dallas Stars locked up one of their best players to a long-term deal Thursday. Forward Jere Lehtinen signed a four-year deal that will keep him under contract through the 2006-07 season. The deal is worth $14.4 million.

"We are thrilled to get Jere Lehtinen signed to a new contract that will keep him with the Dallas Stars for the next four seasons," Stars GM Doug Armstrong said in a press release. "We've been able to give long-term contracts before, but this signing is a significant one that helps us maintain our stability over the next few seasons."

Lehtinen not only won his third Selke Trophy as the league's best defensive forward last season, but he also established a new career high with 31 goals. Those 31 goals were tops on the Stars in 2002-03.

"I am ready to go for the beginning of training camp next week, and I feel very good about our chance to compete for the Stanley Cup," told the Associated Press.

Lehtinen has 144 goals, 171 assists and a plus-160 rating in 510 NHL games. The Hockey News recently ranked the Finnish forward as the 27th best player in the National Hockey League. Among his teammates, only Mike Modano ranked higher (7th).

Lehtinen becomes the ninth member of the Stars to be under contract through at the least the 2004-05 season. He joins Bill Guerin as the only other player signed through 2006-07. Here's a list of the other Dallas players who are signed beyond the upcoming season.

I'm so glad they stars locked him up. He is one of the best players on the team on one of the biggest underrated players in the league.
