Default GUSCOAT Round 2: Ric Flair vs. Tully Blanchard

Flair has only 2 US title reigns to his name..the First came when he beat Jimmy Snuka in Greensboro NC in april of 1980...Flair was coming into his own and was being groomed as a World Champion when this occured..he kept the belt unil Janurary of 81 when he lost to Roddy Piper...the second reign oddly enough would come not unitl the mid 90s...amidst all the NWO Flair would beat Konnan to win the United States title in July of 96...he kept the belt until September when a shoulder injury forced him to give up the title.

Tully Blanchard, and member of the four horsemen, and a great tag specialist with Arn Anderson, claimed singles gold during his battle with Magnum TA..in July of 85 he won the US title, and kept it for 4 months before giving it back to Magnum.

I don't think either one did too much with the belt.
I think I'll have to abstain from this one.

dug a little bit deeper and came up with the fact that Flair first won the title in 1977 over Bobo Brazil.....he's actually held the title five times total.....

the reason that I chose Flair over Tully here is because Flair had a more successful run and for a longer period of time.....Dre said in an earlier post during the tourney that if this were for the TV title, Tully Blanchard would win hands down.....and with that I agree.....but Blanchard was mainly about being a tag wrestler, a guy that relied on the IV Horsemen....he won the US title during one of the great time periods in the NWA, and beat one of my all time favorites in Magnum T.A......but he only held it for a period of four months and then was out of the US picture, and he never gained anything above that title in the singles world.....

Flair won the US title long before the IV, and it did something for his career that it did not for Tully Blanchard.....he won the title, lost it, won it back, gave it up to pursue the tag titles, won it again, lost it again, won it once more and then.....then he began to pursue the World Title.....so, the time that Flair spent holding the US title was facing opponents that were going to push him to the next level in his career, they were going to push him into the world title picture.....

I believe that Ric Flair would have been the World Title holder without ever having been a part of the IV Horsemen, largely in part to the fact that he was a fine US champion and used that to elevate his career......I don't believe that Tully Blanchard gained anything by having held the US title for four months.....and that is why I think Flair deserved this vote.....

Nice post man, I agree 110%

Blanchard = Greatest TV Champ Ever.....

Flair and Steamboat= 1 of the greatest fueds in US Championship history. Flair was the man who for all purposes paid some dues. He was a legit US champion. One of the best actually. His first title reign was just like Tully's. And if it would have stopped there this would be a lot harder. Both men held the title first time around for about 4 months. However Flair goes on to win it again, and holds it for about 8 months this time.(Longer then Orton held the IC title, that WWE makes such a big deal about). Then he would be in some great classic fueds, holding the title a total of 6 times actually, and making him way greater then original given credit for as the US champion. Oeo great points on how the title elovated Flair a lot more then Blanchard.....
