Default GWOAT Quarterfinals: Steve Austin vs. Keiji Mutoh vs. Sting

well the vote count is in and Austin and Mutoh scored a combine 91 votes in the first 4 rounds the lowest of all the Quarterfinal matchups...Therefore they must now battle Sting(the wildcard winner) as well...so here it is Austin beat Bruno Sammartino last round, while Mutoh is the last of the Japanese stars left in the tourney...Sting has survived after an early second round loss to Shawn Michaels, now who moves on to the Semifinals?

To be honest this is clearly the hardest poll I have come across yet, and It will take me several days to answer this. I hope you leave this bracket up for a while DC, cause I'm off to watch some match's of all three, and try to remember some research on all of them. I mean these guys are penticles of Pro Wrestling. The top of the iceburg, man this is gonna be a tough one.

Well Austin's impact was only for 3 years though, that is why I wouldn't go on impact alone, but overall skills in the ring on the mic, and longivity of ones career and classic battles and match's. At least it will be open till friday, I'll most likly make up my mind by thursday.......

this is still tough to call, When Austin was in WCW he was a great US champ, but probally remember most for his tag partner ship with Flyin Brian..Sting was on top of his game then, and the battles with the great muta make this definetly a tough decision.

I don't like Stone cold if for no other reason than his RFS. I don't like Sting too much but he contributed somewhat. I can't think of anything against Mutoh.

Austin in his best day still doesn't compete with Sting in his day, IMO. And Austin is suffering froma bad case of RFS. Sting is still healthy. I'd like to know why Austin has so many votes here. What impact? His impact was mid-1997 till 2001. He is just a shell now. Sting should win this.

Sure...you can take a run at numbfuck SC or plainjane Josh or complete moron Alex or can't get out of his own way Boston...but I don't agree with you about Barry and it's "Rueben Droughns this" "weed that" "your kids this" "Look at me and my halo over my head that."

Whatever. First of all, you don't have any depth of knowledge about any of that stuff, so you're just talking out of your ass. Secondly, you wouldn't be saying any of that shit if Barry Bonds wasn't some roided up freak who you're in love with.

It's fucking gay. I have better things to do than deal with someone who can't even debate a point, rather changes the subject again and again to deflect the fact that he's dead wrong. It's what dumbass 6th graders do...

I honestly don't give a fuck about your opinion. Like I told Alex, they're just words on a screen. I can't believe you don't get that concept...but okay.

I didn't want to put it that way, but since you want to press on...

Lame dude. Just lame. I have better shit to do. You probably should too...but I'm betting you don't...

well, I promised a book and haven't delivered.....If Austin wins this, and unfortunately it looks like he will, you are looking more at the gimmick than the Prowrestler.....

Mutoh isn't going to get many, if any, votes and he shouldn't when matched up against these two.....but let me get down to Austin vs. Sting......

this part is previous from the HBK matchup, but read it again "if you weeeelllll"......
Quote:
Steve Borden, aka Sting, began his career as a fan favorite and still is a fan favorite.....he's been a face longer than possibly anyone in the history of wrestling, and he's still able to sell that fact today.....Sting was the foundation of a wrestling organization that badly needed someone to stick around.....during the WCW/WWF wars that went on, many wrestlers would go from one promotion to the other in a search for more money, more fame and different storylines.....and this was not related strictly to the NWO days as it went on for years before that.....Flair, LOD, Arn Anderson, Ricky Steamboat, Lex Luger (to name a few) all jumped ship at one time or another to the WWF.....Sting stayed on....

Sting was the driving force in the late 80's and early '90's against the greatest stable of all time, the IV Horsemen.....he would team against them, take them all on at once, win some and lose some.....He was the epitome of kayfabe as your heart would fall when he lost, and leap for joy when he won.....a classic "good guy" in the world of wrestling, Sting would always befriend those in need.....

Then, the WCW/WWF wars were soon to turn the sports entertainment world on its ear.....the nWo was about to be established, and Nash and Hall made the jump to WCW.....Sting's foundation label was about to be put to the test.....he handled it admirably, again with full kayfabe.....when the angle played that he declared himself a free agent, and he turned his back on the WCW, you knew it was only a matter of time before the legend that is Sting would surely pounce on the nWo and destroy them.....I would watch more with anticipation of the Stinger returning and destroying Hogan than anything else....and sure enough, when the time was right, he returned.....taking on the "Crow" character, and descending from the rafters to wreak havoc again on the "bad guys" of wrestling.....standing firm for the promotion which had given him so much over the course of the years, giving them a hero again.....

Sting was capable of wrestling guys twice his size (Vader, the Giant) and making it believable that a smaller man could win.....I didn't say put on ***** matches, I said made it believable that he could win.....he could work the slower pace, exposing few weaknesses and working the in-ring psychology needed for it to be a believable match.....and he did the job on more than one occasion.....

He was also capable of wrestling the power guys.....a very agile performer, he could make you believe that he was just as strong as the Lex Luger's of the world, because he would wear down the opponent with his moves and still have the stamina to compete.....credibility in his matches have long been a staple of Sting's in-ring ability.....he's not necessarily a high flyer, and you may never see him in a ladder match.....but he doesn't look out of place in any type of match against bigger opponents.....

Smaller opponents are the ones where I believe Sting shines the most.....he works very capably at a quicker pace, and allows the smaller man to dictate that pace so the smaller guy doesn't appear weak against him.....his technical in ring skills give him the ability to work many wrestling moves that others simply cannot, and he usually finishes off the smaller guys with the submission holds......

Sting's favorite opponent over the years (and the respect is seemingly mutual) is Ric Flair.....these two combined in the NWA and later the WCW to always put on a crowd pleasing match, and they worked very well together.....classic matches that always would be 3-5 star matches, and I would pay still yet to watch them one more time......WCW believed in these two so much that the very last match ever in the WCW was Sting vs Flair on Monday Nitro with Flair tapping out to the Scorpion Deathlock.....this wasn't the best match, because of the emotion of the evening, but if you consider yourself a wrestling fan you should sit down and watch it sometime.....

Sting still stands steadfast by his decision to not wrestle in the WWF, although it would mean a lucrative amount of money for him.....he has stayed true to his roots, and the foundation of the WCW is still wrestling (albeit not on a full time basis) in the NWA.....
I wrote that on the spur of the moment, and each time I've read it it rings true.....but let me continue for a moment, and reiterate some of the things I wrote then.....

Sting did all of these things over the course of a career that spanned three decades.....he was the face of a company that struggled for a while, he backed off when they asked him to, he became the front runner again when they needed him to.....Sting was a consumate professional, a guy who always put the company and their goals ahead of himself.....He could have made more money in the WWF.....he could have become a character in Japan.....instead he stayed with the company that gave him his biggest opportunity as a youngster......

Sting, in later years, was a driving force in getting WCW involved with New Japan's stars.....he wanted the wrestling business to be about more than WCW while also wanting WCW to be at the top.....

Sting started out as a tag team wrestler, as a lot of the guys did in the '80's.....he was a partner with some guy who was later known as a major player in the WWF.....yes, the Ultimate Warrior.....one went on to greatness.....the other became insane.....

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Steve Austin......

I have been a fan of Steve Austin from the time he was a tag partner with Brian Pillman.....he always displayed an excellent in ring ability and a drive that was matched by very few in this business.....cocky, self assured.....he started, if I recall, in the Memphis area.....as so many guys do.....once he got big enough, it was off to the NWA/WCW.....

Steve Austin has always been very charismatic, both in ring and out.....mic skills that are deteriorating now, but they have been at the top of the game for nearly a decade in the WWF.....he coins phrases that the crowd latches onto.....he makes people hate him because he is so popular......he has been a great competitor, and he was the one that finally put the WWF back on top of the ratings war......

but!......and this is why I believe that you should never vote someone like Steve Austin over someone like Sting......Steve Austin is a crybaby and a quitter.....he quit on the WCW when they didn't go the direction that he wanted.....he enjoyed a great, great run with the WWF.....but does anyone remember what he did when they decided that he should step back a little bit?.....that's right, he quit......

there is an old story about taking your ball and going home.....the thought process behind that is that if you take the ball, the game will fail without you......

Steve Austin has taken his ball and gone home on two occasions.....after he left the WCW, they became the most succesful wrestling organization in the world.....fittingly, when he left the WWF/E, they became the most succesful wrestling organization in the world.....

yes, I said in the beginning that I am a Steve Austin fan.....I can't explain why.....but when it comes down to who is the better PRO and then who is the better Prowrestler, the simple answer is Steve Borden.....Sting.....the franchise of WCW......not Steve Austin, the redneck quitter......
