Default Umm, WTF Bank of America?

So a little while ago I opened a checking and savings account with Bank of America. I've been watching my spending, especially lately, when funds are low.

Anyway, I go to look at my statement. Looks right, up until out of nowhere, I get docked with a $66 overdraft charge, which put me in the red so to speak. I'm confused thinking, mmk wtf? I didn't overspend. After that $66 overdraft charge I had a few more charges, several of which I checked online before I made the purchase to make sure I had the money, and it all looked good so I went ahead and spent, only to later be charged with a $132 overdraft charge.

Seriously, what the hell? I never over-spent. If I did it wasn't by anything near that amount, and the times I apparently spent when I was already overdrafted, I swear online it said I had the cash. I'm calling Bank of America tomorrow to figure out what's going on. Looks like I might be applying for another part-time job earlier than I thought.

Anything like this every happen to any of you, and if so, what was the final result?

All time the actually...I have Wells Fargo...so every time it overdraft...they charge me -35 dollars...and then for every day that it is in the negative it an addition of negative 5 dollars a day...

Most of the times because I over spent what I've got...

There a few times when I deposit a check in...and somehow it got deposited into my saving account instead...and when I use the check card for gas and foods and such thinking that I already deposited in my check...but instead I got charged with an overdraft...if that is the case...I call them and say that I have the statement from the bank that I deposited the check in...and I have money and whatever...they usually take away the overdraft fees for me if that is the case...but if I over spent and I know...then I just pay the overdraft fees...

I have overspent once, but I have overdraft protection via my savings account. That saved me from having a large charge from the bank, supposedly. Although, they still charged to take it out of my savings to cover the rest but according to the bank it would have been more if I had not had the overdraft protection.

I've been looking things over and I think I've found the mistake. I bought something through pay-pal, and didn't have any money in my account. I quickly put $50 to cover it, but instead it took it out of my savings. I'm pretty sure I did overspend, but not by much. Sure as hell not $250 some odd dollars worth. Hopefully I can get this sorted out tomorrow.

Don't trust online banking...too much. Some banks take up to a day or two to update the actual amount of the account. Your best bet is to use ATMs to check your balance...one that is owned by BoA if you have one close. It may be inconvenient but it's probably more accurate.

Also go by your available balance...not your...other balance, whatever your bank may call it...it's been different for every bank I've ever used.

true...

Depending on the bank, any debit card/credit card transaction may take anywhere between 1-5 days to hit your account

Same shit happened to me about two days ago, kinda. I accidentally used my Bank of America card (with a balance of $2) instead of my Wachovia card (with a much higher balance) at the grocery store the other day to pay for fifteen dollars of whatever.

My savings account had about ten dollars in it, so when I tried to spend the fifteen on a two dollar balance, it cleared out my savings account, my checking account went over by about $5, and then I was charged a $25 overdraw fee. I didn't even know about it until a few days later. I deposited $50 to my checking account to cover the overdraft and then some, what it did was pay off the over draft, replenished my savings to what it was at previously, and then put the left over money (about 12 bucks) in my checking account.

Well my mom Western Unioned me $220, telling me to consider it my birthday get my ass out of trouble present. She told me to go down to our local BoA and talk to them. Told me to own up to it, and see if I can get some of the charges reversed. If not, then I now have the money to pay for it.

Also thanks for the financial advice guys.

You have to be careful with electronic debits. The bank refers to them as ACH (stands for Automated Clearing House) and if you are confused by your statement and the talking heads they have at those desks to help you aren't making any sense or matching up, then you need to speak with the ACH Department, which can be a hassle...but a worthwhile one.

Basically any time you use your checking account but don't physically write out the check and hand it off to some slappy (check by phone, online check or debit card), you're doing an ACH. Your bank has 5 business days to process it, but they can't process until the business that you're paying gets the debit request into them.

Sometimes these things can take up to a week to actually "hit" your bank account. And once it gets there, your bank has 5 business days to process it. Please note that even though your bank may be open on Saturday, Saturday and Sunday are not "business days."

Basically what you have to do is resolve your account status every other night if you're going to be making purchases all over the place. It's actually advisable to do it even if you're not making a lot of purchases...if for no other reason than noone else is going to and you've got to check your money. Got to.

If you think that f'ing around with a bank statement every night or every other night is tedious, and you're not sure if you want to deal with it...all I can tell you is: "Welcome to adulthood."

Late.

It's not that it's too tedious. I just found out the hard way that paper is way better than digital in these cases.

Oh and as an update. Went down to BoA and they completely refunded me the overdraft money they charged. Brought it to $7 in the hole, which I then erased by putting in $220.

Happens to me every week. I pay so much than I really should. But I guess it works too.
