Default Today's News: Catch crabs, win a vasectomy
LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. -- Deputies say a Lauderdale-By-The-Sea man shot and killed his ailing car last Friday.

Investigators said that John McGivney, 64, walked out of his home at Bougainvilla Isles Apartments last Friday with a .380 caliber, semi-automatic pistol. He walked across the parking lot and pumped five rounds into the hood of his 1994 Chrysler LeBaron LX. A tongue-in-cheek police report listed the LeBaron as "deceased."

The apartment manager, George Haberkorn, said he asked McGivney what he was doing. He said McGivney responded, "I'm putting my car out of its misery, George."

After getting a call that shots had been fired, Broward Sheriff's Office deputies rushed to the scene and set up a perimeter around the apartment complex. They ordered McGivney to come out of his apartment unarmed and with his hands up. He did, and was subsequently charged with a firearms violation. McGivney bonded out of jail the next day.

The police report said, "except for the car, no injuries were reported."
NEHALEM BAY ó Crabbers of all ages and abilities will be vying for tagged Dungeness crabs worth cash and prizes at the fourth annual Jetty Fishery/Nehalem Bay Crab Derby Benefit Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12. Two of the crabs are worth $1,000, and one lucky crabber will win a no-incision vasectomy, donated by one of the eventís beneficiaries, the Rinehart Clinic.

Event proceeds will go to the clinic, which provides affordable healthcare to North Tillamook County residents and visitors, as well as the Wildlife Rehab Center of the North Coast, a nonprofit organization that cares for injured and displaced coastal wildlife.

Each morning before the Derby begins, event staffers will release 26 tagged crabs into the Nehalem Bay, corresponding to thousands of dollars in prizes ranging from gift certificates to coastal hotels to the vasectomy and the $1,000 crabs. No experience is necessary, as staffers will be on hand for instruction. Participants are free to bring their own gear or rent from the Jetty.

Throughout the weekend, more than 50 vendor booths will offer arts and craft items, entertainment, fresh food, wine tasting by local vintner Nehalem Bay Winery, a beer garden, face painting and ice-cold beer from Portlandís Pyramid Ale & Mactarnahanís Brewery. The 56-foot commerical crabber/trawler Miss Mary will be at the Crab Derby this year, selling fresh seafood delicacies. For more information, go to

Reservations for taking part in the Crab Derby are not required, but recommended by calling The Jetty Fishery at (503) 368-5746.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it...
