Nearly 20 Million Vehicles Recalled in 2003

The Daily Auto Insider
Monday, March 8, 2004
March 2004

Automakers recalled 19.5 million cars and trucks last year, or 8 percent of all light vehicles in use, according to a story published in The Detroit News.

The number of recalls issued by automakers also rose reaching 529 in 2003, up from 436 in 2002 and just below the record 541 recalls in 2000, the News said, citing government figures show. In 1990, there were 208 recalls industry-wide.

However, defect-related recalls in which potentially serious safety flaws are addressed fell last year to 13.6 million from 17.6 million in 2002. But "compliance" recalls prompted by a failure to meet labeling and other rules led to 3.4 million recalls, second only to 4.8 million in 2000.

The reasons why there are so many recalls, according to experts queried by the News, include tougher federal reporting requirements, wider use of "glitch-prone" computers, an ongoing shift to electrical controls from mechanical devices, and a proliferation of new model launches.

General Motors accounted for 7.4 million or 40 percent of the 19.5 million vehicles recalled in 2003. GM recalled 4.6 million vehicles in 2002, according to an analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.

Of GM's 27 recalls in 2003, eight involved noncompliance issues accounting for 2.6 million vehicles. In one recall, the News noted, 1.7 million GM cars, SUVs, minivans and full-size vans came equipped with operating manuals that didn't adequately explain a child seat anchorage system.

Ford, with 3.4 million vehicles recalled, and Chrysler, with 2.1 million vehicles, gave Detroit automakers a disproportionately high share of the vehicles recalled industry-wide in 2003.

By contrast, Toyota cut the number of vehicles recalled by 58 percent to 212,252 in 2003 from 496,213 in 2002.

Well looks like american cars lead the recalls race and Toyota leads on imports althou they have reduced their amount of vehicles recalled.

Thoughts.

never have been able to figure out why there are fewer recalls on imports.....

recalls are often over something that is silly, but they are a nuisance to deal with.....

Easy, japanesse manufacturers are very maticulous and do a lot of research before putting parts on their vehicles. Remember that they are very well know for their high demands on manufacturing standards.
