I have seen a common argument on this board and in the media and it seems to go as follows: There is a disproportionate number of Muslims that are terrorists so there must be a concrete connection between Islam and terrorism that needs to be addressed and investigated.

Using that line of reasoning, there seems to be a disproportionate number of Catholic Church leaders who are child molesters. Does this mean that we should claim a concrete connection between Christianity/Catholicism and child molestation that needs to be addressed and investigated?

Ignoring their justifications for a moment, what say you?

The world is to fucked up as it is to start "investigating" specific religious groups, that would just cause un-rest between nations and things would really get out of hand.

The line of reasoning I posted is totally backwards IMO.

Catholicism does not lead to child molestation. But, certain evidence, including interviews with convicted child molesters of the cloth and also homosexuals that enter the priesthood, indicates that service as a Catholic priest is a magnet for those who harbour these urges.

Keep in mind that all child molesters are paedophiles, but not all paedophiles are child molesters. Many do not act on their urges, and are indeed revolted and horrified by them. But they are there nonetheless. Some make it into therapy without succumbing to the desire to have sex with kids. These unfortunate souls have provided valueable insights into the thought processes of paedophiles.

These testimonies seem to suggest that many Catholic child molesters became priests in the hope that by taking the vows of celibacy and becoming men of the cloth would remove their desires - that God would make them clean and grant them peace of mind if they served him well. Same with Catholic gays. They have this naive belief that once they take the oath, their sex drive somehow is turned off.

If you are a devout Catholic and believe in the tenets of the church that actually makes sense - pray to God and submit to him and surely he will answer your prayers and relieve you of your impure, satanic impulses - but it doesn´t really work that way now does it?

There are many facets of serving as a Catholic priests that attract those who are revolted and afraid of their sexuality, whether that fear is justified, as in the case of paedophiles, or unneccesary, as it is with homosexuals.

There are a disproportionate number of molestation cases that were facilitated through the internet and public chat lines. Does the internet then lead to child molestation?

Catholicism certainly doesn't lead to child molestation, as it also certainly doesn't also lead to terrorism, lest we forget that the Irish Republican Army is governed on the whole by Catholics.

When dealing with a problem, you have to look at the reasons why, not what different cases have in common. When confronted with problems people spend all their time either gawking in disgust or chastising who or what they perceive to be the origin of their issue.

People need to fix the problem, and the problem is not the Catholic Church or even the preisthood itself.

Not all Muslims are terrorists, and Islam does not lead to people becoming terrorists. Same thing with Catholics and molestors.

Late.

The conflict in Ireland has almost NOTHING to do with religion. It used to, but now it's down to whether you regard yourself as a unionist or a nationalist.

And the IRA decommissioned all their weapons so they can't really do much now...

Regardless, the Provos are/were Catholic...the UVA are/were Protestant. Again, being an Irish Catholic doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be a terrorist. And by the way, I think it's great that the unpleasantness has subsided.
