Default Chew on this: Books vs. video games

I read an article on this in a recent publication (can't remember the name, but I had nothing to do while they did their admin stuff) and got to thinking.

While it is easy to believe that books are automatically better than video games in an education sense, one must go beyond the first belief into more practical thought than instinct. Consider that in many games, there is a boatload of decision making to be done. No book, regardless of the topic, will allow you make a decision that could save you or kill you in the end.

Many opponents of video games point to the violent nature in many of the on-screen images, such as any random scene in any game with "GTA" in the title. They rarely, if ever, refer to the violent nature of many books, such as the classic "Lord of the Flies" in which boys kill boys and post their victims' heads on sticks.

As far as physical activity goes, niether is that great as both tend to involve a lot of sitting and no actual movement.

So which is better for a developing mind: books, video games, or getting off his obese ass and playing a real game?

Have you seen the list of books that are banned these days because they corrupt kids? Kids aren't allowed to even read a lot of books like Tom Sawyer or something. And then they turn around and make them read books like "Billy's 2 Daddy's" or "Lifes A Bitch, But You're OK!" It's all fucked up, everywhere.

The reason these books are banned is because some parents are paraoid freaks, that are convinced, that if their kids read them, they will be screwed up for life. I personally have read quite a few books on the top 100 most banned books list, and I considered them all fine reads.

I'm personally supprised I didn't see The Outsiders on that list with all the violence in that book.
