Default What are your thoughts on the death of Skandor Akbar?

Legendary manager General Skandor Akbar passed away yesterday at age 75. This was a pretty surprising turn of events as the World Class great appeared at the NWA Legends Fanfest just a few weeks prior in Charlotte, North Carolina.

I watched Akbar throughout the 80's when he worked for WCCW. He was their version of Bobby Heenan (minus the comedy). Seemingly all of the foreign monster heels, misfits, and bad guys ended up being managed by either Gary Hart or Skandor Akbar. Whereas Hart generally focused on just two or three bigger name heels, Akbar was the one with the large stable he called Devastation, Incorporated. Heels floated in and out of Akbar's stable pretty regularly, like they did with Heenan.

Akbar worked the rich Arab sheik gimmick who could afford to import all of those monsters he did. He had a great look, was good on the mic, and was an entertaining manager. He was serious, though; unlike Heenan who incorporated a lot of humor and slapstick into his stuff.

After Gary Hart, I would consider Akbar the number two manager in WCCW history. Percival Pringle III was there for a while before going to the WWF as Paul Bearer, but Akbar was the better entertainer.

R.I.P. General. You were one of the big reasons WCCW was THE hottest indy promotion in the world in the 1980's.
