The term 'controversial' sells and sparks interest. Wrestling has used that term for decades.

Because controversy creates cash. Even when a storyline or character is not controversial the commentators still call it controversial. Fans are drawn to controversy--that is why they never stop talking about the Montreal screwjob and talking about it to death. Although Bret, Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels have long moved on from that incident and have gone on with their lives there is still debate going on until this very day as to who was right in this incident (Bret Hart was right, duh).

Controversy happens rarely in professional wrestling but when it does you can be sure the promoters will be dwelling about this controversial incident and milk as much cash as they possibly can from the incident. Fans want controversy, soap opera and scandal instead of five star quality wrestling matches. That is the reason why the WWE uses the term controversial so much.
