Changing The Abyss Character

Feb 23, 2010 ProWrestling.net is reporting that TNA is in the process of changing the Abyss character on TV. It's being said that during the course of his program with Hulk Hogan, Abyss' character will lose a lot of the neurotic aspects of his character and eventually emerge as an invincible force in TNA.

So basically TNA is making Abyss more of a carbon copy of the original masked Kane than he is already? Yeah good way to seperate themselves from the WWE...not.

I hope so the monster was better than the nut job. TNA can use his character better than it has been in the recent past.

This is not a change.

Let's look at the history of the Abyss character. Abused as a child, tries to kill his father, gets put away in an insane asylum for years, rescued by his father from that asylum, gets brainwashed by his father and brought into pro wrestling as an unfeeling uncaring monster doing the bidding of his evil Svengali-like father.

Sting cracks that armor, sees the human being beneath the monster, and tries to help the human overcome the monster within. Other wrestlers try to help, as well, but Sting has the most success, until Lauren. Along the way, Abyss is shown that he doesn't need his father (James Mitchell) and he eventually drives him away. Abyss, child-like and innocent, is left to fend for himself in a world he doesn't know how to live in. Lauren takes a real interest in Abyss and tries to help him, as well. Abyss, having had no emotional-growth in his life, suddenly finds a woman not his mother taking an interest in him, and he overreacts, considering her both his girlfriend and a mother-figure; he loves her on both levels. Those who would take advantage of Abyss use her to manipulate him. Dr Stevie in particular.

Lauren departs and Abyss, emotionally still a very young child, is again left to fend for himself in a world he is only beginning to understand. So he wanders around, trying not to make anybody mad as he looks for another father-figure for guidance, to tell him what to do. Mick Foley shows up. Abyss's hero. So Abyss latches on to Foley, looking for guidance and approval. But sometimes Foley tries to hurt Abyss, emotionally AND physically. Abyss is confused by this, and although Foley is still Abyss's hero and he will do anything Foley tells him to do, Abyss doesn't completely trust Foley. And he still wanders around, still trying not to make anybody mad, still looking for father-figures for guidance and approval.

Eric Bischoff shows up. An evil and mean authority-figure who Abyss is scared to death of. Bischoff, heartless bastard that he is, takes great delight in torturing the monster, a man MUCH larger than he is. So Abyss becomes even more neurotic and child-like, more scared of making other people mad. Bischoff, for personal kicks, continues the child abuse of Abyss, driving the monster to tears and scaring him to death.

Enter Hulk Hogan. To Abyss, Hulk Hogan is the ultimate authority-figure/super-hero. When Hogan stomped down to the ring, angry at Bischoff for his treatment of Abyss, Abyss (like most small children do) misunderstood and just knew HE had done something to make the god-like Hulk Hogan angry.

In Hogan's office, had Hogan told Abyss to go play in traffic, Abyss would have done so without questioning it. To Abyss Hulk Hogan is the ultimate authority-figure and one not to be questioned at all. Hogan gave him that tremendous pep talk and the ring. Abyss, child-like and innocent, believed everything Hogan told him about the power of that ring.Losing a lot of the neurotic aspects of his character is just the next evolutionary step in the humanization of Abyss, a process that has been going on for years, and started with Sting cracking the armor that James Mitchell had built around Abyss, to get a glimpse of the human being inside that monster. Hulk Hogan, with his pep talk and giving Abyss his ring, is continuing what Sting, Lauren, and Foley started. And that is to bring the man out of the child-like monster.

To me, this is the most fascinating long-running angle in the entire wrestling business.

Abyss is NOT like Kane. Kane may be sadistic and demented but he's fully aware of everything he does and he makes his own decisions. Nobody manipulates Kane and Kane doesn't ask for, or need, guidance or approval from anybody. Kane is an adult in every sense of the word.
