Default RIP The Missing Link

'THE MISSING LINK' DEWEY ROBERTSON PASSES AWAY FOLLOWING BATTLE WITH CANCER
by Mike Johnson @ 9:39:10 AM on 8/16/2007

Slam! Wrestling in Canada is reporting the sad news that the one and only Missing Link, real name Byron John "Dewey" Robertson passed away 3:30 am this morning in his native Hamilton, Canada following a bout with cancer. Robertson began his wrestling career in the 1960s as the protégé of Whipper Billy Watson and also appeared under the ring name Troy Steel and as the Masked Crusader.

Robertson's most famous persona was the the Neanderthal, mute, green faced Missing Link, with runs in Bill Watts' Mid-South Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas and even a brief run managed by Bobby Heenan in the WWF.

Robertson disappeared from wrestling for several years before resurfacing in 2004 on independent and religious-themed events. He was still in amazing physical shape for his age and released an autobiography "Bang Your Head" discussing his career and battles with drug addiction, homelessness, and returning to Canada to turn his life around.

From J.R's Blog
Quote:
Dewey Robertson who gained his greatest notoriety and success as the character known as the Missing Link died of cancer early this morning.

I first met Dewey in the 1970’s when he came to work for LeRoy McGuirk’s Championship Wrestling territory based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was simply billed as Dewey Robertson in those days and was positioned to be one of the top fan favorites in the territory but for whatever reason he never really got to the level that was desired.

I can recall working as a referee for a series of matches with Dewey and Bruiser Bob Sweetan, the territory’s top villian at the time, that featured matches going to a 30 minute draw in week one, a 60 minute draw in week two, and a 90 minute draw in week 3. This match occurred in many markets in the territory in an attempt to establish Dewey as the top fan favorite by going toe to toe with the area’s baddest man in Sweetan, another native Canadian.

Dewey was an excellent athlete who stayed in great physical condition and had sound fundamental skills. However, it was when Robertson donned the face paint and became the Missing Link that he truly found his niche. “The Link” had a nice run with Dark Journey as his valet for a time and he seemed to get his best exposure when matchmaker Ken Mantell was calling the shots. The Missing Link became an extremely popular “character” that did not have to do promos which was never Dewey’s forte.

Dewey, himself, was a character and was always ready to socialize with a beverage or two and I remember that he traveled a great deal with his wife who, if I remember correctly, “managed” The Missing Link for a time as well. Dewey also lived in a nudist colony at one point in his life which was the cause for some funny stories, as folklore would have it.

I can vividly remember Dewey talking to me about the NHL and hockey in general as the native Canadian was a fan of that game. He introduced himself to me as “James John Byron Dewey Robertson” and was proud to tell anyone that he was from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I learned a great deal about our Canadian neighbors and certainly about hockey from Dewey.

For those of us that knew Dewey, he will certainly be missed and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Perhaps there is solace in that Dewey is now cancer free, is without pain, and in a much better place to spend eternity.

Please say a prayer for the Robertson family if you are so inclined. Rest in Peace Dewey.
J.R.
