Bad attitude backstage and him going rough on his opponents is what ruined it.

Here's the recap of Ryback:

When Ryan Reeves was repackaged from Skip Sheffield to Ryback, he started a Goldberg-esque winning streak, beating any challengers, especially in handicap matches. However, while WCW kept up with Goldberg being unbeaten and took him a while (in a good way) to ultimately become WCW World Heavyweight Champion, WWE immediately decided to have him face CM Punk for the WWE Championship in a Hell in a Cell match at the PPV of the same name, replacing John Cena who suffered an injury. Because CM Punk was at his long reign as champion as well as starting a heel turn to remain hot, many felt that he shouldn't drop the title while they were those who didn't want Ryback's undefeated streak to end. In the end, Ryback lost thanks to referee Brad Maddox and it was downward spiral for Ryback as at Survivor Series, upon being in the Three-Way match for the WWE Title, The Shield debuted and assaulted him, driving him through the announce table, enabling Punk to pin John Cena to retain his title. With Punk injured and, incapable of defending the WWE Championship at TLC, Ryback teamed with Team Hell No to face The Shield in their in-ring debut at the PPV in the match of the same name (albeit not championship belt or contract for grasp), but lost. After, for the third time, losing to Punk in a TLC match on RAW thanks to, once again, The Shield, he tried to get revenge by teaming with Cena and Sheamus to face them at Elimination Chamber but came up short. His match with Mark Henry at WrestleMania last year wasn't worth the watch and he lost but not before giving Henry the Shellshock.

Afterwards, he turned heel by feuding with John Cena, who won the WWE Championship from The Rock (who ended CM Punk's 434 day reign) at the same event. Their Last Man Standing Match at Extreme Rules ended with Ryback driving Cena and him intro the electric backdrop on top of a ramp making it a no contest. Their feud ended at Payback with Cena retaining his title in a 3 Stage of Hell match (Lumberjack match: Ryback won; Tables Match: Cena won; and Ambulance match: Cena won).

After feuding with and defeating Chris Jericho at the Money in the Bank, he debuted a bullying gimmick (yet claims to hate bullies) and eventually aligned himself with Paul Heyman in his feud with CM Punk (in the process, Ryback renewing his feud with Punk). However, Punk constantly beats Ryback and beating up Heyman that Ryback and Heyman's alliance imploded. Because of this and how stiff Ryback works (giving Dolph Ziggler another concussion), he was demoted and started a tag team with fellow former Paul Heyman Guy, Curtis Axel, in which they formed the name, RybAxel (a combination of their ring names) but their team hasn't been quite a success. However, they'll be challenging for the WWE Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania.

Long story short:

Ryback started with momentum with his undefeated streak but he was, arguably, given his WWE Title short too soon. It killed his momentum along with The Shield successfully beating him down at any chance they get. His heel turn had mixed results, considering that he was getting over as a face for his "Feed Me More", trying to give him new personality based on his heel turn while still keeping him as a main event talent and aligning himself with Paul Heyman didn't help. Once his stiff style and momentum being dead is apparent, he was demoted and hasn't been the same bad*** he was from the beginning of his Ryback persona.

CM Punk killed it with his tedious 400+ day long title reign. He should have won against CM Punk at Hell in a Cell 2012. Then it would have been The Rock vs Ryback at Royal Rumble 2013 and the Rock would have lost, so we would not have been stuck with him until Wrestlemania 29.
