In TNA wrestlers can, I think in WWE Vince makes a character for you and you go with it, plus the gimmick has to be PG.

It depends on the wrestler. Even though Vince Mcmahon came up with the Undertaker, The Undertaker created his own gimmick. Taker decided what his character wore and behaved like. He also created the American Bad @ss gimmick. John Cena also has control over his gimmick, I believe he can up with that whole white boy rapper thing.

Certain wrestlers are able to create their own gimmick and manifest their characters into whatever they want.
