Why does it matter so much if your mask is taken off in WWE?

It looks like a big deal when an oppenent tries to take off one another's mask. Why does it matter?

@Steven. I was wondering about Mysterio. In one episode, Mysterio tried to take off CM Punk's. And it seemed like a big deal? So how about Mysterio? Punk's mask was probably storyline right?

Its not just WWE

Its Wrestling all together.

Like if you took Cody,Punks or Kanes mask off, it means nothing.

But if you took Sin Caras or Mysterios off, it would mean alot

Its their pride, their legacy.

If your mask comes off during a show and people see it, your not allowed to wrestle for that company under the mask again

They are probably just too embarrassed to be seen on WWE television.

With the luchadores, the mask is their identity and it is a great shame to loose the mask.

With somebody like Kane, who just wears a mask for costume effect and little else, it means nothing.
