How come Tommy Rich wasn't allowed to get another chance to be NWA champion?

Tommy Rich was just a "good ol' boy" from Tennessee who chose to be a professional "rassler". He loved performing for the fans but he wasn't interested in the political side of the business. His one time as NWA World Champ was just the result of allowing himself to be a pawn in a political power struggle for the Georgia territory in the early 80's. Out of respect and admiration for Harley Race, Tommy helped him out in this but otherwise didn't play the politics game.

Being NWA World Champ was as much politics as it was anything else. You had to be in good with the NWA Board of Governors, you had to have "friends in high places", and you had to have universal appeal to be a draw everywhere you went. Tommy was "too southern"; majorly over in the South, but not so much everywhere else. The NWA Board of Governors (NWA promoters and owners) never saw Tommy Rich as "World Champion" material.
