In his book "Controversy Creates Cash", Eric Bischoff stated that his favorite firing was that of the Honky Tonk Man.

If this was the case why would he bring him in and hire him in the first place?

Never has anyone known of this fact.Of course,at first you can't say how good a guy would be in any wrestling promotion.Honky Tonk resembled a bit like ...you know.. Elivis Presley.Eric, may have been disgusted, who knows, maybe even, some personal reason as well, some secretly made controversy.

He has fired many, but firing the man with an Elvis Presley like gimmick, might have ammused Bischoff.

During that time Eric wanted to do everything he could to embarrass the WWF so I'm guessing firing their longest running IC champ fit that bill for him.

It was the Honky Tonk Man. Everybody hates the Honky Tonk Man. I'd have fired him, too, if I had the chance.

But maybe Bischoff is an Elvis fan and found Honky's impersonation offensive. Honky's mannerisms, personality, and manner of speaking are pure "mountain southern". Bischoff doesn't care much for "hillbillies".

Could be Bischoff wanted to change his gimmick and Honky refused. Maybe Bischoff saw something in him as a performer but needed to change the Elvis gimmick to bring it out, and Honky refused.

I really don't know the definitive answer. I don't think either of them have ever said.
