Am I the only one who thinks that the term Smart Mark is an oxymoron?

it meske sense in some contexts

but like a lot f the 'vcarny' terms it has become overused and corrupted by people who don't really know what it's supposed to mean

-- I have been fully aware of teh 'wroked' natuire of Wrestling for sebveral dacades now... but there are still some well worked matches that have me suspending that knowledge and watching it as though it were 'real'

I know i always felt the same, but i suppose it does make some kind of sense on some level when you think about it. I agree with the others that it is overused, just like saying any wrestler that loses a match got buried or that any wrestler that loses a couple of matches is a jobber.

Nope. I forget who said it, but someone once said You're a smart mark? Okay, good for you, but you're still a mark.

You're still being worked, it doesn't matter how much you think you know.

In this context smart just means you know a little about how the wrestling business works (storylines, champions chosen by the promoter/booker/writers, and things like that); it doesn't have anything to do with intelligence.

And mark is just the wrestling business' name for a wrestling fan.

So smart mark is just a wrestling fan who knows a little about how the wrestling business works. That phrase is not an oxymoron.
