Would a Cena heel turn be as shocking and big as when Hogan turned heel in the 90s?

I'm actually in favor of it...WWE should start taking risks again, it's part of what keeps things entertaining.

Only if it happens at WM28 against The Rock. I think this is WWE's last chance to make Cena turn heel WITHOUT it being long overdue.

No way, i think everybody is expecting cena to turn heel sometime, and sometime soon. The rumor is he is going to betray rock at Suvivor Series, for better storyline. When Hulk went heel people was shocked because well he is Hulk f******* Hogan. He was a god. And nobody saw that coming

Not really. Would it be a big deal? For sure, but would it be an earth-shattering, business changing moment? I don't think so.

Now, this isn't because Cena isn't as big of a star as Hogan or anything like that. For all intents and purposes, Cena basically is this generation's Hulk Hogan. He serves the same purpose and fills the same role. The big issue with Cena turning heel and it not being lasting like Hogan's was is the fans.

Today, everyone knows that professional wrestling is fake. Even the most passive fans know terms like heel and face and are able to spot the trends and themes that the WWE uses regularly. We know that in real life, none of the wrestlers in the WWE actually hate each other, or hate the fans, or that any of the moves they use are real. Put simply, we know that it's a show.

That wasn't always the case. In the 80's and most of the 90's, the lines between fiction and reality were much more blurred then they are today. Now, we watch the WWE as we would any other regular T.V. show. We suspend our disbelief and accept the fact that it's scripted. Before though, when kayfabe was a closely guarded secret, people had an idea that wrestling wasn't exactly on the up-and-up, but few really knew for sure. It wasn't nearly as clear cut as it is today. Today, wrestlers, even the biggest stars and most beloved fan favorites, go bad all the time, so the shock factor isn't what it used to be.

Now, I still think that Cena turning heel would get a big reaction and it would be a major moment for storylines go into the future, but it wouldn't be as ground-breaking as Hogan's was. Virtually all the main event stars in the WWE today have gone good and bad more times than most of us can count. The effectiveness of the heel turn is greatly diminished today.

Also, the effectiveness of a Cena heel turn would weigh greatly on how it was enacted. Having Cena just get pissed off after losing and blaming the fans wouldn't make any sense and wouldn't mean anything. Cena has lost titles and matches many times and he's so used to a portion of the audience booing him that he's incorporated it into his gimmick. I'm not saying that an effective heel turn by Cena is impossible, obviously it isn't, it would just have to be done well to be even remotely lasting.

But I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon. To part of the crowd, Cena is already a heel. The WWE doesn't really have any incentive to change his character. They have the best of both worlds right now. He's a hero to a big part of the crowd and he's a hated heel to another part of it. Some love him and some hate him, but EVERYONE cares about him.

Perhaps even bigger.

He'd have a great gimmick The Doctor of Thuganomics waiting for him. He can run his mouth on the mic, he can stick his nose in other people business fine, and he'd regain his older generations fans back in a heart beat showing that he's not just loyal to a certain age group but the ENTIRE WWE Universe. It's kinda boring when your playing the same gimmick only to the same age group for the last 5 years.
