Default WWE Returns to Ratings Power on USA

WWE's Return to USA Shows Ratings Power
October 05, 2005
By Anthony Crupi

USA Network threw a raucous homecoming celebration for World Wrestling Entertainment’s Monday Night Raw and was rewarded for its efforts with basic cable’s biggest audience in prime time on the night.

Raw powered up in its new home Monday night as 5.6 million total viewers tuned in for a three-hour special (roughly from 8:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m.) featuring grappling legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and Hulk Hogan. The special drew 2.9 million in the 18-49 demo and 2.5 million 25-54s.

In its final week as host of Raw, Spike TV lured about 2 million less viewers, earning a 2.9 household share in the first hour and a 3.0 from 10:00 to 11:00. By comparison, USA averaged a 4.7 share in the 9:00 to 11:00 slot.

Spike TV counter-punched with its own sports franchise, running Ultimate Fight Night Live in the 9:00-11:00 slot. The telecast drew a 1.6 household share and 1.9 million total viewers.

In the key men 18-34 demo, the special edition of Ultimate Fighter drew 670,000 viewers, a 15 percent jump in the category year-over-year.
